Aston Martin DB5 Goldfinger: deliveries of 007-themed special begin
The first deliveries of the limited-runAston Martin DB5 Goldfinger Continuation , an exact replica of the car featured in theJames Bond filmcomplete with working gadgets, have begun – with the British firm gathering five of the 25 examples together to mark the occasion.
The £3.3 million creation is an exact replica of theDB5 driven by 007 in Goldfinger , with each handcrafted byAston Martin Worksin Newport Pagnell. More than 4500 hours were spent constructing each example, using original body panels and a 4.0-litre 290bhp in-line six-cylinder engine driven through a five-speed transmission.
The 25 cars – one for each James Bond film so far – have all been sold, with buyers in Europe, You may also like: TPMS Programming Tool. the US and the Middle East. With deliveries under way,Aston Martingained permission from five buyers to use their cars for a photoshoot, which will likely be the only time that so many examples will be in a single location.
The shoot included a demonstration of several of the working gadgets on the car, which were designed with the help of 007 special effects expert Chris Corbould. They include rotating numberplates – using the licence numbers seen in the film – a ‘bulletproof' rear deflector, headlight ‘machine guns', battering rams, an oil spray system and a smokescreen.
The interior of the cars features an armrest containing the hidden gadget switchgear, a radar console and a telephone built into the driver's door. Although the ejector seat could not be included for safety reasons, the roof panel can be removed to simulate the effect.
Because of the gadgets, the DB5 Goldfinger Continuation models are not road legal.
I also find it a little sad that Aston Martin feels a need to make these cars, to cash in on their James Bond legacy. To me, it cheapens their image to have to rely on such a gimmick.
Taking Aston Martin's new owners into account though, it comes as little surprise!

Kelsea Ballerini will find it hard to readjust when the Covid-19 pandemic is over
Kelsea Ballerini isn't looking forward to having to readjust once the Covid-19 pandemic is over.
The country singer was one of hordes of musical artists forced to axe tour plans amid the coronavirus but told Rolling Stone that there were positives in the lockdown - mainly because she could spend more time with her husband, fellow singer Morgan Evans.
Kelsea even admitted that she will miss the things she has come to take for granted during the crisis.
"Hoping that there will be some version of touring coming back, (but) it will be tough for me to readjust to being away from home and missing birthdays and special moments with my close circle again," she told Rolling Stone.
The Hole in the Bottle star noted that she's optimistic that lessons gained during the pandemic will continue to have an impact as time progresses.
"I hope everyone had some kind of emotional awakening this year and that we carry that into the future by doing a better job of taking care of each other," she shared.
"Everyone was levelled in one way or another, and I think that made people realise we're all 'in this together' as cheeseball and overused as that may sound," Kelsea went on, adding: "That's a mentality we can all benefit, learn, See: Launch car diagnostic. and grow from."

Tobacco-Based COVID-19 Vaccine Got Approval for Human Trials | IE
Using tobacco plants to create a vaccine against COVID-19 has moved one step closer to becoming a reality.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has officially approved British American Tobacco (BAT) to start human clinical trials of its COVID-19 vaccine.
If the trials go well, it'll join the ranks of other vaccines currently already in production. However, BAT's one can be produced in just six weeks, compared to months with conventional methods. It can also be kept at room temperature, versus freezing conditions for some other vaccines.

The reason BAT's vaccine can be produced so quickly is that elements of it are rapidly gathered on tobacco plants, the company's staple good.
Developed by its biotechnology division, called Kentucky BioProcessing (KBP), the company cloned a section of the genetic sequence of the coronavirus and developed a potential antigen. The latter is then inserted into tobacco plants for reproduction.
These relevant proteins grow, are harvested, and processed all within six weeks on the plants - making the production process a faster one than conventional methods, reported BAT.
"Moving into human trials with both our COVID-19 and seasonal flu vaccine candidates is a significant milestone and reflects our significant efforts to accelerate the development of our emerging biologicals portfolio," said Dr. David O'Reilly, BAT's Director of Scientific Research.
BAT's vaccine still lags well behind other vaccines already being produced, however, if it's able to be produced safely and quickly, it may prove useful in the coming years.
The clinical trial with begin with 180 healthy adult volunteers broken into two age groups: 18 - 49, and 50 - 70. They will be administered either a low or a high dose of the vaccine, or a placebo, and assessed for up to a year. The first evaluation will happen 44 days after the dose is administered.
BAT isn't the only company looking into plants for vaccines. Canada-based Medicago is looking into a plant-based flu vaccine.

Elderly woman found dead at home while waiting for quarantine tests positive for COVID-19 post mortem
An elderly woman who was found dead at her Tai Wai home last Saturday while waiting for quarantine arrangements tested positive for COVID-19 post mortem.
Chuang Shuk-kwan, Head of the Center for Health Protection's Communicable Disease Branch, said in a press conference Thursday that a quarantine order was issued to the 62-year-old on Dec. 9, the day her daughter was confirmed with the virus and hospitalized.
On Dec. 10, the woman told relatives that she was experiencing a blocked nose, but that she was feeling fine otherwise. She could not be reached the next day.
Her relatives contacted the police for help on Dec. 12, when she was found dead at her Mei Lam Estate apartment.
Her post-mortem COVID-19 test came back positive, Chuang said. It is not known if her coronavirus infection is linked to her death.
Ho Pak-leung, a microbiologist at the University of Hong Kong, criticized the government's slow response on a Commercial Radio program Friday and called for the tragedy to be publicly addressed.
In an earlier email reply to Coconuts, the Department of Health said that arrangements of transfer to quarantine centers for close contacts of patients "would be made as soon as practicable."
The department did not answer Coconuts‘ questions specific to the case.
At least three COVID-19 infections have been confirmed in Mei Tao House, including the woman and her daughter. Cleaners in protective gear disinfected the estate on Friday morning, according to Tai Wai district councilor Ng Ting-lam.

Relief fund to provide $10M in grants to struggling small businesses
Michigan Economic Development Corp. (MEDC) announced a new statewide grant program from Pure Michigan to help struggling businesses impacted by the COVID-19 crisis.
The Pure Michigan Small Business Relief Initiative is a $10 million statewide initiative aimed at providing grants to small businesses, including restaurants and bars, lodging, live events venues, movie theaters, and more.
"We remain focused on getting critically needed relief into the hands of those businesses that need it most," said CEO Mark A. Burton in a news release.
Through its COVID-19 relief and recovery programs, the MEDC says it has reached more than 18,500 businesses statewide and helped in retaining nearly 147,000 jobs.
The application process opens at 9 a.m. Tuesday. Businesses can apply at https://www.michiganbusiness.org/about-medc/covid19/relief/.
Grants will be awarded, up to $15,000, on a "first-in" basis according to a news release. The funds are provided through the federal U.S. Housing and Urban Development (HUD) CARES Act funding. Businesses can use the funds for payroll expenses, rent, mortgage payments, or utilities. Once approved, grants are expected to be dispersed in mid to late January 2021.
The grant amounts available are divvied up among 10 regions across the state. In Oakland, Macomb, and Wayne counties, $3.5 million in grants are available, the most of any region.
"The Pure Michigan Small Business Relief Initiative puts federal funding to work for many of the small businesses in Michigan hardest hit by the COVID-19 pandemic," said Gov. Gretchen Whitmer in a news release "My administration will continue working to support our small businesses and their employees as they continue to navigate and persevere through this pandemic, through the Pure Michigan Small Business Relief Initiative and all of the COVID-19 business relief efforts MEDC has implemented this year. "
Just last week, Oakland County executives announced $10 million in support funding for its struggling county restaurants. Most of the Oakland county funding, $7 million, will be handed out to about 1,000 businesses that had already received earlier CARES Act stabilization funds.

Andiamo liquor license suspended for hosting indoor wedding event.
The Michigan Liquor Control Commission has issued an emergency suspension of Andiamo Italia's Warren location liquor license for violating current COVID-related restrictions on gatherings and face mask wearing orders.
Andiamo's owners, who operate a couple of dozen restaurants, had backed a short-lived attempt last month to get restaurants across the state to band together and open in defiance of a state ban on indoor dining aimed at stopping a surge in COVID-19 cases in Michigan.
Seven other businesses also had their licenses suspended for serving alcohol and, in some cases, food indoors in violation of the state's current ban on indoor dining, You may need: Topdon obd2 scanner. according to a press release Tuesday from the Michigan State Police.
The Andiamo suspension was based on Dec. 4 wedding held at the Warren location on East 14 Mile Road with approximately 62 guests. Investigators found that while guests had table assignments, they "were observed seated at tables, mingling around the ballroom and standing at the bar," according to the MLCC complaint,
While there were approximately 10 tables that investigators found were properly spaced out, "guests were not social distanced at the tables or when mingling around the ballroom."
The complaint also noted that guests were not wearing masks. The suspension was issued Dec. 10.

Andiamo's Class C liquor license and permits for Sunday sales, dance-entertainment and additional bar were suspended plex, which includes a banquet center, restaurant and live entertainment showroom. It does not affect Andiamo's other locations.
Joe and Rosalie Vicari own the Andiamo chain of restaurants as well as several others. The Free Press reached out to the Vicaris who issued a "no comment" through a spokeswoman.

The businesses in violation face virtual hearings before an administrative law judge to determine whether the suspension continues or that the establishments be fined or receive penalties.
The Vicaris on Nov. 24 authored a letter urging fellow restaurateurs to band together and open their doors in defiance of the pause in indoor dining should the Michigan Restaurant and Lodging Association lose its lawsuit against the state over the ban. "Our industry cannot survive another extended closure," the letter stated.
After the letter became public and the MRLA lost the lawsuit, the couple changed course and said the right solution is to try to work with the Gov. Gretchen Whitmer's administration to come up with a compromise.
On Dec. 3, the day before the alleged violation, the Vicaris held a meeting broadcast via Zoom with fellow restaurant owners at the Warren banquet center.
"I don't want to disobey the government orders," Joe Vicari said at the meeting. "I really don't because it's a losing situation. And we have people that have convinced me that's not the right solution."
During the Zoom call, Bloomfield Hills attorney Kelly Allen, who specializes in liquor law and licensing, warned the restaurateurs that if they violate the state order, the Michigan Liquor Control Commission will issue a summary suspension.
"That means you are closed and your liquor license is down," she said. "There will be a hearing - these are difficult to beat and you will have to pay a fine."
"It's a serious situation for those who have liquor licenses," Allen said. "What's Andiamo without a glass of wine? You want to protect that liquor license."

PM Lee: Gov’t To Issue Free COVID-19 Vaccinations For S’poreans, Long-Term Residents By Q3 2021

Singapore has approved the use of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine said Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong today (14 December) in an address.
The first shipment is expected to arrive by the end of this month, making Singapore one of the first few nations to obtain this vaccine.
Singapore is also expecting other vaccines to arrive here in the coming months.
If all goes according to plan, the country will have enough vaccines for everyone here by the third quarter of 2021.
PM Lee outlined Singapore's Covid-19 vaccination strategy, which was recommended by a committee of doctors and experts set up by Ministry of Health (MOH).
The committee has proposed that the entire adult population should be vaccinated, but to make vaccinations voluntary.
First priority will be given to those who are at greatest risk, such as healthcare workers and front-line personnel, im608 review

Thereafter, the rest of the population will be progressively vaccinated, with everyone who wants a vaccination to get one by the end of next year.

However, pregnant women, immuno-compromised patients, and those under 16 are not recommended to be vaccinated.
He added that the HSA will continue to actively monitor the safety profile of the vaccines.

Singapore has approved the use of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine said Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong today (14 December) in an address.
The first shipment is expected to arrive by the end of this month, making Singapore one of the first few nations to obtain this vaccine.
Singapore is also expecting other vaccines to arrive here in the coming months.
If all goes according to plan, the country will have enough vaccines for everyone here by the third quarter of 2021.
PM Lee outlined Singapore's Covid-19 vaccination strategy, which was recommended by a committee of doctors and experts set up by Ministry of Health (MOH).
The committee has proposed that the entire adult population should be vaccinated, but to make vaccinations voluntary.
First priority will be given to those who are at greatest risk, such as healthcare workers and front-line personnel, im608 review

Thereafter, the rest of the population will be progressively vaccinated, with everyone who wants a vaccination to get one by the end of next year.

Not Even a Mud-Coated Windshield and No Wipers Could Keep Sébastien Ogier From Winning Rally Monza
Sébastien Ogier claimed his seventh World Rally Championship title almost doesn't seem like news at this point, but there's good reason for that: he's an absolute beast behind the wheel. Case in point: This absurd moment from Rally Monza where Ogier's wipers quit working in the mud, forcing him to drive blind for a bit.
Rally Monza's final power stage took place at the Autodromo Nazionale di Monza, where drivers drifted spectacularly onto Monza's infamously steep original banking. Conditions for Sunday's final stage were quite mucky, with snow, rain and mud all popping up throughout the rally. While the power stage had a lot of tighter sections, these cars still accelerate rather quick and demand the driver's and codriver's full attention. Toyota keeps a lot of stats about its current car-including its acceleration-under wraps for good reason, but the 2017 version of Ogier's Yaris WRC went from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.7 seconds, according to Toyota Car Reviews.
This didn't deter Ogier, who kept driving with mud coating the windshield even though his windshield wipers wouldn't turn on.

Ogier's six previous titles were all consecutive starting in 2013, with Ott Tänak as the c-c-c-combo breaker champion in 2019 when Ogier was in a thoroughly lackluster Citroën. Ogier's Toyota teammate Elfyn Evans nearly won the championship this year as he led in championship points heading into Rally Monza, but a heartbreaking crash mid-rally threw Evans' hopes away, leaving it open for Ogier to clinch yet another title.
It's worth checking out the highlights from this rally, as watching WRC cars blast down Monza's iconic banking is a genuine delight.

Total solar eclipse of 2020 prompts launch delay for Rocket Lab
The moon and sun have conspired to keep Rocket Lab on the ground for an extra day.
Rocket Lab had been targeting Monday (Dec. 14) for the 17th mission of its 58-foot-tall (18 meters) Electron booster, which will lift off from New Zealand carrying a satellite for the Japanese Earth-imaging company Synspective. But celestial mechanics have nixed that plan.
"To avoid a solar eclipse that could affect Synspective's mission, we're now targeting Dec. 15 for launch. When customers request a new T-0, we're happy to oblige. That's the beauty of dedicated launch on Electron, our customers get to choose (and change!) their launch time," Rocket Lab wrote via Twitter Friday (Dec. 11).

That skywatching event - the only total solar eclipse of 2020 - will plunge a swath of southern South America and the southern Pacific and Atlantic oceans into darkness. Though Rocket Lab did not elaborate on Synspective's reasoning, the Japanese company may be concerned that this darkness could complicate its satellite's power-generation abilities or impose challenging thermal conditions.
News of the one-day push prompted science journalist Jonathan O'Callaghan to wonder whether an eclipse had ever delayed a rocket launch before. He posed the question on Twitter, specifically paging Jonathan McDowell, an astronomer and satellite tracker based at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics.
"I think that's a first ... mostly because you know in advance when an eclipse is going to be, so the fact that they only just realised this is an issue is a bit embarrassing, You may need: diagnostic code reader. " McDowell tweeted in response.
Rocket Lab calls the upcoming mission "The Owl's Night Begins" because it will launch the first satellite in Synspective's Strix family of synthetic aperture radar spacecraft. (Strix is a widespread and diverse genus of owls that includes such species as the spotted owl and the barred owl.)
Synspective aims to assemble a constellation of about 30 Strix spacecraft, which will "collate data of metropolitan centers across Asia on a daily basis that can be used for urban development planning, construction and infrastructure monitoring and disaster response," Rocket Lab representatives wrote in a mission description.
The launch window for "The Owl's Night Begins" extends from Dec. 12 through Dec. 25, with liftoff opportunities occurring from 4 a.m. to 5:59 a.m. EST (0900 to 1159 GMT) on each day. Rocket Lab nixed the first few days in this window due to expected bad weather over the launch site, pushing the target date to Monday. And the eclipse has now shifted the launch another day to the right.
Rocket Lab is working to make the two-stage Electron's first stage reusable. On the previous Electron launch, which occurred on Nov. 19, the company successfully guided the booster down for a soft, parachute-aided ocean splashdown, fished the stage out of the drink and hauled it back to shore for inspection.
No such recovery activities are planned for "The Owl's Night Begins," Rocket Lab representatives wrote in the mission press kit, which you can find here.

BMW Ditching Formula E After 2021 to Focus on Hybrid, EV Production
This Monday, Formula E lost one of its biggest backers, Audi, which will depart the electric open-wheel series to race the WEC's new top class of hybrid prototypes and the Dakar Rally on electric power. Wednesday, BMW followed this blow with one of its own, announcing it too will quit Formula E after the coming 2020-2021 season, having learned everything it can from the series.
"When it comes to the development of e-drivetrains, BMW Group has essentially exhausted the opportunities for this form of technology transfer in the competitive environment of Formula E, AD: Bluetooth scan tool. " said the automaker about its 24 races thus far in Formula E, during which it has claimed four pole positions, nine podiums, and four wins. The Bavarian marque added that it came away with "new findings regarding energy management and energy efficiency, the transfer of software for power electronics from racing to production, and an improvement in the power density of the e-motors."

BMW says it will use the expertise it gleaned from Formula E in future electrified road cars, of which it hopes to scale up production rapidly, its goal being to sell a total of one million by the end of 2021. The Bavarian marque hopes this number can escalate to seven million by 2030, by which point it hopes hybrids and EVs will make up two-thirds of its sales volume-though presumably fewer recalls as they have of late.
Leaving Mercedes-AMG and Porsche to represent Germany in Formula E further diminishes BMW's already shrinking involvement in motorsport, which is starting to resemble that of Volkswagen. A week after Audi's factory support of Germany's historic touring car series DTM wrapped at the Hockenheimring, a former BMW motorsport official suggested to Motorsport that BMW may not be present for the 2021 DTM season's opening races. Both Audi and BMW have shown support for DTM's new technical regulations which position it as a sort of GT3-plus series, and participation later in the season looks probable, but it's clear the big M doesn't mean to BMW what it used to. That, of course, has been obvious to those who have tracked M cars' perceived decline over the years.

SEAT: 70 years of innovations
With more than 300 active patents, SEAT has a wide history of innovation through its 70 years. Three main inventions revealed the fundamental aspects of SEAT, such as its forward-looking vision – the child safety seat of 1955 -; its vindication for functional design with – the logo-handle – of the facelift of the second generation SEAT Ibiza; or its firm commitment to style, with – the hidden door handle – of the second generation SEAT Leon.
Child restraint system (1955)
The first patent in the 70 years of SEAT history – SEAT ES221068A patent – , was sealed in 1955; it described a child safety seat made up of two metal frames, articulated in such a way that they could fold on themselves like a book, You may also like: Autel OBD2 Diagnostic Tool. which made the seat portable, but above all safer than seating the children in the rear seats without any restraint system (which was common practice at the time). Its design already applied many of the current concepts for an effective child restraint system. The iron rods along with two fabric straps that limited the maximum angle between the bench and the backrest, guaranteed the stability of the child seat. These strips allowed folding and were not dangerous in case the child hit its head with them. The child's comfort was considered "with a backrest and a base made of flexible material, which could be fabric, plastic or similar".
The patent called for two large-opening hooks at the top, allowing the child seat to be hung from the back of an adult seat, especially from a motor vehicle. It also had two smaller hooks, allowing the seat to be used outside the car, suspended like a swing.
The child's body needs a proper retention system to restrain its movements as well. The patent drawings show a 3-point seat belt. The lap belt is made up of two straps that are joined by a buckle that is difficult for a child to manipulate. This belt employs a flexible or elastic material which makes it adjustable to adapt to the child's body size and keep it firmly attached. A vertical third strap is placed between the legs of the child, attached to the belt and anchored on the seat, an anti-sub strap similar to competition harnesses, which prevents the body from slipping under the belt.

In the utility model application ES1042196U, SEAT invents a lock cylinder with a very special cover for several reasons. Uncovering the lock requires pressing the top of the lid with your fingers or thumb. In doing so, the cap tilts and allows you to use the other fingers to assist the rotation, and upon completing 90 degrees, it also operates the latch, releasing the tailgate. At the same time, the cover itself serves as a handle to lift the gate with a natural upward movement of the arm.
The lid is functional and practical, but the master touch to this mechanism was to add the finishing touch by the designers, giving the lid the right style. Specifically, the cover was the "S" feature of the SEAT logo and it saw its first serial application on the facelift of the second generation of Ibiza. This utility model, which could also be motorised, has been used in the vehicles of the brand until today, such as the current generation of SEAT Ibiza and the all-new SEAT Leon.

The rear quarter glass that appears in many cars behind the rear windows allows the expansion of the area of vision for the rear occupants. In most designs, there is a noticeable gap between the rear glass and the rear quarter. However, the SEAT designers decided that they could give continuity to the glazing surface of the rear area in the second-generation SEAT Leon. That allowed gaining style and dynamism in the lines of the vehicle.

Michigan top epidemiologist: We may be plateauing after COVID-19 surge
Michigan's top epidemiologist said Wednesday there's reason for "cautious optimism" because of new data emerging about the spread of coronavirus in the state.
COVID-19 case rates are starting to dip; Michigan is now averaging about 516 cases per million people, down from 610 cases per million people last week, said Sarah Lyon-Callo, director of the Bureau of Epidemiology and Population Health at the state health department.
And hospitalizations of people with COVID-19 symptoms and the rate of intensive-care unit admissions appears to be plateauing or declining, too, See: diagnostic code reader. she said, even though the state overall is now seeing hospitalizations at about 90% of the spring peak.
These are encouraging signs that suggest the coronavirus public health restrictions put in place last month - temporarily halting indoor dining at bars and restaurants and canceling in-person classes at high schools and colleges - might be starting to flatten the curve.
However, she said: "I need to be really clear as an epidemiologist, that there isn't one single metric that encapsulates everything about how the pandemic is responding to people's behavior, how the disease is spreading in the community, or what that spread means in terms of our health care system and our public health system, and people's lives."
The three metrics health officials watch most carefully to measure the state of the pandemic are the percentage of positive coroanvirus tests, the number of cases per million people, and the percentage of hospital beds occupied by patients with COVID-19 over the last seven days, Lyon-Callo said.
One of those measures - the percentage of positive coronavirus tests - appears to be plateauing and has undulated in recent weeks. It averaged 14% on Nov. 15, and dropped to 13% on Nov. 23. On Saturday, the percentage of positive tests rose again to 14.4%.
And it's still too soon to say definitively whether Thanksgiving might change the outlook for Michigan when it comes to COVID-19, Lyon-Callo said. "Everybody uniformly needs to admit that we have a real problem," Fauci said during a virtual health summit organized by Johns Hopkins University's Bloomberg School of Public Health. "We've got to own the problem. If you don't own the problem, you're never going to fix the problem.
"We're seeing in some parts of the country, what would be equivalent of almost denial ... where people still don't think this is a big deal. They think it's kind of fake news or a little bit of a hoax or what have you.
"It's not. It's real," Fauci said, adding that the U.S. is seeing a record number of COVID-19 cases, hospitalizations and deaths. "The numbers are absolutely real."

COVID-19 case rates are starting to dip; Michigan is now averaging about 516 cases per million people, down from 610 cases per million people last week, said Sarah Lyon-Callo, director of the Bureau of Epidemiology and Population Health at the state health department.
And hospitalizations of people with COVID-19 symptoms and the rate of intensive-care unit admissions appears to be plateauing or declining, too, See: diagnostic code reader. she said, even though the state overall is now seeing hospitalizations at about 90% of the spring peak.
These are encouraging signs that suggest the coronavirus public health restrictions put in place last month - temporarily halting indoor dining at bars and restaurants and canceling in-person classes at high schools and colleges - might be starting to flatten the curve.
However, she said: "I need to be really clear as an epidemiologist, that there isn't one single metric that encapsulates everything about how the pandemic is responding to people's behavior, how the disease is spreading in the community, or what that spread means in terms of our health care system and our public health system, and people's lives."
The three metrics health officials watch most carefully to measure the state of the pandemic are the percentage of positive coroanvirus tests, the number of cases per million people, and the percentage of hospital beds occupied by patients with COVID-19 over the last seven days, Lyon-Callo said.
One of those measures - the percentage of positive coronavirus tests - appears to be plateauing and has undulated in recent weeks. It averaged 14% on Nov. 15, and dropped to 13% on Nov. 23. On Saturday, the percentage of positive tests rose again to 14.4%.
And it's still too soon to say definitively whether Thanksgiving might change the outlook for Michigan when it comes to COVID-19, Lyon-Callo said. Honda's New Robot Buddy Helps Kids Cross Streets Safely | The Drive
Honda engineers have developed a new robot buddy they call "Ropot," which attaches to a child's backpack strap and reminds them to cross the street safely. The device is about the size and shape of a GoPro camera and has a friendly expression, which presumably makes it feel more like a friend than a watchdog for kids. When the child reaches a pre-established crossing point, Ropot buzzes like a smartwatch, prompting them to stop and look left and right before crossing. The device also has a vehicle detection sensor and provides haptic feedback as an extra reminder.
The GPS-equipped Ropot route is set up in advance by a parent or guardian, with each crosswalk set up as a vibration point. Paired with a smartphone app, See: Bluetooth obd2 scanner. the guardian can review the route with the child and make sure it's working as prescribed. As a bonus, the parent can see exactly where the child is on the route through the app.
Kids typically start school between the ages of 5 and 6, and their vision is still developing. They're also getting a feel for their independence and-ask me how I know-testing the limits of it. Kids often have this affliction called "I already know that!" and think they have all the information before they actually do.
This combination of innocence and overconfidence can lead to pedestrian accidents while walking to school, and in Japan, Honda is working on a solution for that. It's common for kids in Japan to start walking to school at the age of seven, and that's a particularly dangerous time of their lives in terms of pedestrian accidents. There's even a phrase for that: "Devil's 7 years old." I don't know how to translate that exactly, but it definitely conveys the viewpoint.
Engineer Daisuke Kiryu of Honda R & D is a father, and he noticed this problem. In the course of his research, he found evidence that children have only about two-thirds of the field of vision of adults, which makes assessing danger more difficult. Kiryu started thinking about how he can keep his own kids safer and help others at the same time.
"There is a limit to how much adults can tell their children, 'Watch out for the car,'" he said in a story on the Honda Japan site. "In order to reduce the damage caused by traffic accidents for children, another approach is needed."
Kiryu, however, is a muffler specialist, so he needed help from his colleagues to develop an electronic solution to the challenge. He recruited Satoshi Fujii, who took on system development, including sensors. Yu Saitsu was is in charge of user experience and interface design, developing materials and illustrations that explain how to use the Ropot. And Sa Kikuchi oversaw the planning and coordinating the demonstration experiment, testing the concept out with her own three children.
Think of Ropot as a cross-traffic pedestrian detection system but from a kid's perspective. While they're small, they'll enjoy the cute factor of this little robot buddy.

SpaceX Launches Upgraded Cargo Dragon 2 to ISS | IE
On Sunday, SpaceX carried out its 21st Commercial Resupply Services mission (CRS-21). The space company's Falcon 9 rocket launched off of Launch Complex 39A at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida at 11:17 AM EST.
The launch marked the updated Dragon capsule's first outing into space. It's able to carry 20% more volume than Dragon's older version and "has double the amount of powered locker cargo capability," as SpaceX's statement read.
Breaking a number of records, the updated Dragon ship can now travel up to five times to the International Space Station (ISS) and remain there for double the amount of time it previously could.

The Dragon capsule successfully separated from the Falcon 9 rocket's second-stage about 11 minutes after liftoff. On Monday 7 December, See: scan tool. this stage will autonomously dock at the ISS.
Approximately nine minutes after launch, the booster's first stage landed back on Earth onto one of SpaceX's drone ships in the Atlantic Ocean, called "Of Course I Still Love You," in a seamless touchdown.

The liftoff was originally scheduled to happen on Saturday but had to be postponed by 24 hours due to inclement weather.
Yesterday's cargo craft is carrying 6,400 lbs (2,903 kg) of supplies and scientific information to the ISS - perhaps including some Christmas cheer for the crew. "The crew is going to get some type of Christmasy food on orbit," Kenny Todd, NASA's Deputy program manager for the International Space Station (ISS) said during a prelaunch news conference on Dec. 4.
"I don't think that will be any surprise to them, but anything more than that ... I don't like to get out in front of Santa Claus."

Once the Dragon capsule docks at the Space Station today, it'll become the second Dragon vehicle attached to the ISS at the same time - for the first time ever.

UPDATE Friday 4 Dec: Drone footage of the Arecibo Observatory collapse has officially been shared online by the National Science Foundation (NSF). Two videos from different angles put the collapse in complete display.
Cables break off seemingly out of nowhere, the giant telescope swings and sways in slow motion before rapidly gathering speed and disappearing beneath the foliage in the first video. Splinters fly into the air, and debris clouds billow up from below. It's a dismaying image.
The second video is shot from a drone's perspective, higher up above the Observatory. This, more shocking, Autel mk908p

The suspended platform of the 1000-foot (305-meter) telescope in Arecibo Observatory, an icon of astronomy, collapsed in on itself overnight in Puerto Rico, according to the National Science Foundation (NSF).
This catastrophic ending was feared by scientists and engineers to be imminent after multiple cables supporting the platform broke in recent months. The inevitable has now happened, and the 900-ton platform that hung above the radio dish fell 450 feet (140 meters) below around 8 a.m. local time and caused massive damage, as documented with photos online.

Just a few weeks ago, officials had announced that the telescope was to be dismantled amid safety fears. This was the final blow to the famed telescope which has aided astronomical discoveries for 57 years and got its share of hurricanes, storms, and earthquakes. Now, the platform, with its damaged and worn out cables trying to hold it up for months, has lost its battle with gravity.

Thankfully, no one was hurt, according to staff at the observatory in Puerto Rico. The NSF said in a statement that an investigation into the platform's fall was ongoing. According to the initial findings, the top sections of all three towers holding up the platform broke away and the structure fell after that, CNN reports.

"Initial findings indicate that the top section of all three of the... telescope's support towers broke off. As the 900-ton instrument platform fell, the telescope's support cables also dropped. Preliminary assessments indicate the observatory's learning center sustained significant damage from falling cables," wrote NSF in statement.

What is the battery life of an electric car?
First time EV buyers are often worried about range anxiety - that feeling of being caught short on flat batteries miles from a charging point. Yet also of concern is the actual life of the battery pack. Experience with mobile phones, tablets and laptop computers has taught consumers that, over time, the batteries powering them can lose efficiency, resulting in the need for more frequent charging. So should you be worried? Well the good news is EV cells are more resilient than you'd think, AD: Autel diagnostic scanner. plus there are ways to make sure your car's batteries will survive better than most.
After range anxiety, battery life is one of the most common concerns for people making the jump from internal combustion-engined cars to EVs. All batteries degrade over time and with use, meaning they become less efficient as they age and, ultimately, the range of your car is reduced. Furthermore, battery technology doesn't come cheap, and by the time the cells are in need of replacement they will cost far more to buy than the car will likely be worth - which is why we tend to replace mobile phones in their entirety rather than replace the battery pack. Yet it's not all bad news, because there are ways to increase the lifespan of your car's battery, keeping it healthier and more efficient for longer. More importantly, while performance may degrade over time, ultimately the cells should still be providing at least 70 percent of their capacity even after 200,000 miles.
Why does an electric car battery lose charge or degrade?
Continual advances in battery technology mean that issues surrounding degradation of performance are being reduced all the time. However, even the latest lithium-ion cells aren't completely immune to losing performance over time, with a number of factors playing a role. Perhaps the biggest single contributor to the decline in efficiency is the cycle of use and charging. Frequent draining of the cells followed by a full charge can, over time, damage the battery's ability to maintain its optimum energy storage - it's why manufacturer's typically recommend charging only to 80 percent and never letting the range drop to zero miles.
Rapid charging also plays a part, because channeling so much electrical energy and so quickly generates much higher temperatures in the battery pack. Liquid cooling of the cells helps mitigate this, but use a rapid charger frequently and over time these extreme heat cycles will cause damage to the lithium ion packs. In a similar but less extreme way, cars that are used in hotter climates tend to suffer a subtly greater reduction in performance than those in cooler conditions.
How can I care for my electric car battery?
Happily, there are ways you can help preserve the power and efficiency of your battery over time. One of the major ways of protecting the cells is by carefully managing the charging and discharging of the cells, which in an ideal world means trying to avoid capacity dropping below 20 percent and not adding more than 80 percent when charging - above the latter figure is when batteries tend to get hottest, which takes a toll on the cells' delicate chemistry.
Happily, most EVs now give you the option to programme your car's charging schedule, allowing you to decide when the electricity flows and, crucially, letting you set a cap on exactly how much pours into the cells. By the same token, it's best not to completely drain the battery. Most EVs will always make sure there's a bare minimum of energy left even if it won't allow the car to move, but storing your car for long periods and allowing electricity to leech away is to be avoided.
Speaking of charging, it's best to only use (Direct Current) DC rapid chargers sparingly. Although fine for topping up on longer journeys, or in emergencies when you need a quick burst of energy, a by-product of rapid chargers' speed is the increased, lithium-ion damaging temperatures in the battery as it copes with the electrical onslaught.

Volkswagen R boss departs brand for second time in five years
Jost Capito has stepped down as the head ofVolkswagen 's R performance car division after three years in the position, Autocar understands.
This revelation comes less than 48 hours after the German car makerannounced it was ending all of its motorsport activitiesto concentrate its engineering on the establishment of an extended range of electric ID-badged models.
The 62-year-old German is yet to officially comment on the reasons for his departure, but differences in opinion with new Volkswagen chairman Ralf Brandstätter on the future of R in the absence of any official motorsport engagement are said to be behind the decision. Capito has departed the brand for the second time within the past five years.
In 2012, Capito was appointed director of motorsport for the Volkswagen brand and led the company to victory in the FIA World Rally Championship in 2013, 2014 and 2015, before becoming CEO of McLaren Racing in 2016.
After a short and turbulent period at McLaren, he was lured back to Volkswagen in 2017 to head up the company's expanding R division as a successor to Ulrich Riestenpatt Richter. Since then, Capito has overseen the development of a number of R-badged Volkswagen models, including thelatest Golf R .
Initial indications of a shift in emphasis for the R division came in 2019, when Volkswagen confirmed it had axed its involvement in the World Touring Car Racing championship, AD: Launch obd2 scanner. which it contested with the Golf. The move effectively severed any link between Volkswagen most popular R model, the Golf R, and its motorsport activities.
A further shift in Volkswagen's performance car activities also came apparent earlier this year, when it revealed a456bhp plug-in hybrid version of the Touaregwas to wear R name despite using the same suspension tune as other Touareg models - a move that critics claimed diluted the brand's standing.
Performance versions of Volkswagen's new ID-badged electric models are set to adopt the GTX name, starting with thefour-wheel drive ID 4 GTX
that's due out next Spring.
Brandstätter's decision to axe Volkswagen's motorsport activities, including the program for the ID R prototype, also appears to have put paid to earlier plans to establish a range of R-badged EVs.
