Relativity Space Debut Fully-Reusable 3D-Printed Rocket | IE

Relativity Space - a 3D-printed rocket aerospace company - just announced its next rocket after Terran 1, a small launch-capable vehicle slated to lift off later this year, according to an initial report from CNBC.
The new rocket is called Terran R and will be much larger than its predecessor. An orbital rocket with roughly 20 times the cargo capacity of Terran 1, Terran R will also be entirely reusable - encompassing both the first- and second-stage rockets, one-upping SpaceX's workhorse, the Falcon 9.
This comes on the heels of major funding rounds with the likes of Y Combinator, along with endorsements from the White House and The World Economic Forum, and even NASA officials.
"When I founded Relativity five years ago, it always was [inspiring to see] SpaceX launching and landing rockets, See: TPMS Tool. [and] docking with the International Space Station," said CEO and founder Relativity Space Tim Ellis in a Tech Crunch report. "

his idea that going to Mars was critically important for humanity's future, and really expanding the possibilities for human experience, on Earth and beyond."
The reusable Terran R rocket is "really an obvious evolution" from the aerospace firm's earlier Terran 1 rocket, said Ellis in the CNBC report.
"It's the same architecture, the same propellant, the same factory, the same 3D printers, the same avionics and the same team," added Ellis in the report.
Ellis also said he's always been a "huge fan of reusability." Despite the reduced cost of rocket construction via 3D printing and automating launch vehicles, "making it reusable has got to be part of that future."
Relativity raised more than $680 million since its founding, five years ago. In the manner of Terran 1, 90% of Terran R will consist of parts gathered via additive manufacturing, using the biggest 3D printers on Earth in what Ellis called "the factory of the future," according to the CNBC report.
As of writing, Relativity is valued at $2.3 billion - making it one of the most valuable private space firms on the planet, with investors like Fidelity, Baillie Gifford, Tiger Global Management, Mark Cuban, and many more.
Unlike SpaceX's Falcon lineup, Relativity aims to keep its first rocket - Terran 1 - in service over the long term. "t's a great product," said Ellis in the report. "We're not pulling a 'Falcon 1 to Falcon 9' change," he added.
Professional engineers looking to make an auspicious entry into the private space industry may be interested to know that Relativity is hiring amid the COVID-19 crisis, with open positions for an Additive Manufacturing NDT Engineer, Automation and Mechanical Engineers, and many more.
While SpaceX holds the prize as the go-to private launch system for NASA and several global governments, there is much room for additional entities to make an entry into the rapidly diversifying business of space launch solutions. From SpaceX to Blue Origin and Axiom, Relativity stands poised to join a highly-competitive (and lucrative) party in space.
This was a breaking story and was regularly updated as new information became available.

Michigan football's Jim Harbaugh: DC Mike Macdonald 'really smart'

Jim Harbaugh has had a busy offseason.
Michigan football's head coach signed a four-year extension in January. He assembled a new staff, hiring six new assistant coaches. He put the finishing touches on the 2021 recruiting class, ranked No. 10 nationally.
Now, football is back in Ann Arbor. The Wolverines began spring practice Monday and, as of Thursday, had conducted two practices. The next, Harbaugh said, will be Friday.
STICKING AROUND: Why Daxton Hill doesn't regret passing on Alabama, wants to stick it out
"We are underway here," Harbaugh said Thursday.
Here's what else Harbaugh said about U-M's transitional offseason:
Harbaugh's biggest coaching decisions this offseason were the firing of former defensive coordinator Don Brown, See: Diagnostic Tool. who coached three top-10 defenses in his five seasons at Michigan, and the hiring of defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald. Previously the linebackers coach for the Baltimore Ravens, Macdonald has never called plays before and has never been an on-field college coach.
Harbaugh says he "interviewed a lot of other great coaches" about Macdonald. But there was one recommendation that Harbaugh trusted and held above all others: That of his brother, John, the Ravens' head coach.
"He really liked Mike," Harbaugh said. "He'd be somebody that would probably be their next defensive coordinator. (John) cares about Michigan football and me as his brother. That was one recommendation I knew I could count on. He did not steer us wrong. I respect so many people in football. So many coaches and people that I trust and respect, get their advice, take very seriously when they recommend somebody. No one more than my brother John. He's at the top of that list. That's the way we went. Glad we did."
RAINER SABIN: In Year 7 of Harbaugh's tenure, Michigan is officially rebuilding
While it is still early, Harbaugh has been pleased by what he has seen from his new defensive coordinator.
"Mike is really good," Harbaugh said. "Really smart. Right now, what we've seen on the field is putting in the systems, players understanding them, growing, lot of coaching going on, drill work, installation. On-field coaching has been really good. Really pleased. So far, so good the way the defensive staff is working together and where we're at at this time."
U-M's turn on the coaching carousel didn't come to an end until a few days ago. Linebackers coach Brian Jean-Mary, who had been announced as a returning member of Michigan's staff earlier this offseason, left for the same job at Tennessee. The Wolverines filled that open position by hiring Matt Weiss from the Ravens as the quarterbacks coach.
That led to a few other changes: Ron Bellamy moved from receivers to safeties and Geroge Helow moved from safeties to linebackers.
"Like I did throughout the entire process, I was looking at what coaches would be the best fit for us, best possible coach available, that was the opportunity to hire Matt Weiss, was one of the ones I looked into and I thought that was the best thing for our team," Harbaugh said. "That was the way I could configure it. And also hire Coach Weiss, who I know really good. Been with him at Stanford, he's been with my brother at the Ravens. Swung for the fences there and that's how I could make it work.
JEFF SEIDEL: Why Ron Bellamy's move from West Bloomfield to Michigan is just the beginning
"We're now set. Feel really great about the staff. I really do. Also, told me a lot, too. I asked Ron, ‘Would you be opposed to moving to safeties?' He said, ‘No, Coach, whatever's best for the team.' Talked to George Helow about going from safeties to linebackers and he had the same response, ‘Coach, whatever's' best for the team.' I told them, ‘That's music to my years.' And a tune you don't hear all that often in today's world. Told me I have the right guys and the right guys onboard, working hard, coaching hard. I feel, as you can tell, really good about where the staff is."
Harbaugh didn't want to get into specifics on why he made the decisions that he did this offseason, but said he did what he "felt was best for the team."

Anyone who's ever raced professionally-and whose dad isn't a billionaire-will vouch for the difficulties of acquiring sponsors. It's a massively expensive sport, and even folks who've made it all the way to NASCAR need a hand when it comes to paying for all those tires and windshield tear-offs. Such was the case with NASCAR Xfinity Series driver Ryan Vargas on Monday, who put out a plea on Twitter looking to connect with a hopeful sponsor.
Luckily, New Orleans Saints running back Alvin Kamara gave him an @ right back.
Vargas' tweet made it clear that his JD Motorsports with Gary Keller Chevrolet was in need of a main sponsor. Wearing a plain red livery with few more stickers than what you'd find in a parts-order goodie bag, they'd need a partner to run ing Saturday's Daytona event. That's when someone tagged Kamara, See: Bluetooth obd2. who owns a juice-bar chain in Louisiana called The Big Squeezy, and he replied within a minute.
Soon, Kamara was teasing an announcement that finally came Wednesday morning.
Hey guys!
I don't normally make posts like this, but headed into this weekend we have no primary sponsor on the car for the Daytona Road Course.
We're working hard to secure partners for this year, & if you or someone you know is interested, reach out!
Let's make it happen!💪🏼 pic.twitter.com/2eYPNikAvZ
👀👀👀 ok how do I do this . Lol @RyanVargas_23 wassup!?
The No. 6 Chevy Camaro is set to wear an orange, purple and red livery with The Big Squeezy's logo plastered on the hood. Even though likely no one expected this tie-up, the All-Pro running back had actually tweeted on Sunday while watching the Daytona 500 about starting a team.
🚨NEWS🚨
Beyond excited to announce that I've teamed up with @Saints RB @A_kamara6 & his company The Big Squeezy for this weekend's race at the Daytona Road Course!
Alvin's excitement about NASCAR is unmatched & I'm honored to be the guy he jumps into the sport with!💪🏼🚀 pic.twitter.com/p9FyUlGCzl
Following a bunch of shoutouts to Denny Hamlin and Bubba Wallace, Kamara stuck out the hours-long rain delay until the end. He's been known in the NASCAR driver's circle for a while now, tweeting about races from time to time and commending Wallace for fighting racism in the sport.
Kamara is coming off the best season of his career with the New Orleans Saints, rushing for 932 yards on a pass-happy offense led by future hall of fame quarterback Drew Brees. As for Vargas, he placed 18th at last weekend's Daytona Xfinity round and is kicking off his first full-time season in the series. He was famously sponsored by TikTok last season, which is pretty on-brand for a 20-year-old.

Siemens Mobility to develop Mobility as a Service (MaaS) platform for the Netherlands

Siemens Mobility will sign a contract in the Netherlands with the joint venture RiVier (NS, HTM and RET) to develop a countrywide, intelligent Mobility as a Service (MaaS) platform. The MaaS platform to be delivered in the autumn will allow providers to integrate travel planning. The technological core of the MaaS platform is supplied by Siemens Mobility subsidiaries Hacon and eos.uptrade.
"The pandemic is changing our behavior," says RET director Maurice Unck on behalf of RiVier. "We work, See: Autel obd2 scanner. learn and travel more flexibly: in time, place and choice of means of transport. That is why we are investing in the best travel options for consumers right now. We lower the threshold to easily plan, book and pay for a trip with multiple modes of transport."
"Smart applications that can integrate and coordinate different modes of transportation makes the idea of seamless travel from the first mile to the last a reality. Having the ability to choose from the full spectrum of mobility options to plan, schedule and pay for trips, significantly improves the travel experience and enhances overall quality of life. We are pleased to have the opportunity to provide our intelligent solutions and deliver a MaaS system that will enable mobility in the Netherlands to be more comfortable, sustainable, and efficient," said Andre Rodenbeck, CEO Rail Infrastructure at Siemens Mobility.
"Creating the perfect passenger experience requires cooperation across the industry. It is inspiring to see how NS, RET and HTM are joining forces to make the mobility landscape in the Netherlands even more attractive. We at Hacon and eos.uptrade are very proud to bring our know-how and solutions to this trail-blazing project", says Michael Frankenberg, CEO of Hacon and Head of Intermodal Solutions at Siemens Mobility.
The platform is being developed as an open ecosystem that can be connected to existing apps from the MaaS providers NS, RET and HTM. The initiators call on other mobility providers to join so that traveling by public transport, bicycle sharing, car, scooter, and taxi, can be better connected and more convenient.
Through the MaaS platform, mobility providers can draw attention to their services and better tailor them to the needs of travelers, while also optimizing their fleet management. In addition to efficiency and passenger comfort, MaaS also provides eco-friendly and sustainability benefits. As public transport or shared solutions become more attractive, travelers will only use their cars where it is of most added value to them.

DSO mourns Paul Ganson: 'A giant in the history of our orchestra'

Detroit Symphony Orchestra executives say the organization is grief-stricken by the passing of Paul Ganson, a longtime DSO musician who spearheaded the preservation of Orchestra Hall.
Ganson, who had lived in Appleton, Wisconsin, since retirement, AD: Launch Diagnostic Tool. died Jan. 2. He was hospitalized Christmas Eve amid complications from a recent heart surgery, said George Troia Jr., president of the Detroit Federation of Musicians.
Ganson was the DSO's assistant principal bassoon from 1969 to 2004 and later served as director emeritus. But he was best known as the founder of Save Orchestra Hall, a campaign launched in 1970 to preserve and restore the historic venue, ultimately leading to the creation of the Max M. and Marjorie Fisher Music Center in 2003.
"Paul's extraordinary impact on the DSO cannot be overstated - he stands with (founding director) Ossip Gabrilowitsch and very few others as a giant in the history of our orchestra," the organization wrote in a letter to musicians and staff. "We literally would not be where we are today without Paul."
More: Detroit Symphony announces 2021-22 season, plans for return of live audiences in the fall
The DSO described Ganson as the orchestra's "unofficial historian." He was co-author of the 2016 book "The Detroit Symphony Orchestra: Grace, Grit, and Glory," published by Wayne State University Press.
Ganson's legacy will be celebrated by the DSO "once we are all back together," the letter read.
The below 2003 profile of Ganson, by Mark Stryker, was published in the Free Press ahead of the Max opening.
(By Mark Stryker. Originally published in the Detroit Free Press on Sept. 28, 2003.)
There are many heroes behind the Detroit Symphony Orchestra's $60-million Max M. Fisher Music Center, and there are many red-letter dates in the epic history of the project. But D-Day was Sept. 17, 1970.
It was a Thursday afternoon, five minutes after 4 by Paul Ganson's recollection, when the phone rang. "Are you sitting down?" asked the agitated voice on the other end of the line.
"Yes," Ganson replied.
"Because Orchestra Hall is coming down!"
Orchestra Hall, the DSO's historic home on Woodward Avenue, known for its superb acoustics, had been sold to a Pennsylvania fast-food chain and was slated for demolition in two weeks. Ganson, who had joined the orchestra a year earlier as the assistant principal bassoonist, had fallen in with a tiny group of Detroiters who were fantasizing about renovating the decaying, beloved concert hall the DSO had abandoned in 1939.
It was the day before Ganson's 29th birthday when that fateful call came, and it changed not only the life of this erudite newcomer to the DSO but also the fate of the orchestra and the cultural history of Detroit.
Ganson became the leader of the Save Orchestra Hall movement, the critical organizer and moral force behind the 20-year grassroots drive that ended with the DSO's return in 1989. That success laid the foundation for the DSO's artistic rebirth under music director Neeme Jarvi and the ambitious, decade-long Orchestra Place redevelopment project that reaches its apex with the opening of the Max M. Fisher Music Center on Oct. 11.
"The beginning of it all is Paul," says DSO board chairman Peter Cummings.
THE MAX, as the new building has been nicknamed, is a 135,000-square-foot addition to Orchestra Hall that includes a 450-seat recital hall, an education center, a four-story atrium lobby and long-needed amenities -- elevators, coat checks, concession areas, musicians' dressing rooms and lockers, and kitchen and catering facilities. Novi-based Epoch Events, a division of the company that operates the restaurants Tribute and Forte, has signed on as the in-house caterer.
In addition to the Max, the Orchestra Place campus includes an office building that opened in 1997 and a Detroit Public Schools performing arts high school to open in 2005. All told, the project represents $220 million in investment in the neighborhood.
"It's going to be a while before I can comprehend the complete wonder and joy of it all," says Ganson, 62. "When I go in the Max, I never fail to be ...

Instacart, Uber, Lyft, Postmates, and DoorDash totally conned you into paying for Prop 22

Uber, Lyft, DoorDash, Instacart, and Postmates spent over $200 million campaigning for Proposition 22, the most expensive ballot measure in California history, You may also like: Autel diagnostic scanner. successfully convincing voters that they couldn't properly pay and protect their workers if they were forced to classify them as full employees - at least, not without cutting back service or substantially raising the price you'd pay.
But now the dust has settled, every single gig economy company that backed Prop 22 has raised those prices anyway. Instacart was the last to join the bait-and-switch today, according to the San Francisco Chronicle's Carolyn Said, who previously told us in January exactly how much some of these companies are charging Californians to pay for worker benefits: $1-$2 per meal with Uber, $1.50 with Grubhub, up to $1.50 per ride with Lyft, and a whole additional 3 percent increase per order with Instacart (for a total of 8 percent, though it doesn't apply to the company's "Express" subscription plan yet). Postmates is charging as much as $2.50 extra per order, our sister site Eater reported.
Instacart threatened price increases if they lost Prop 22.
Now that they won, they're raising them anyway.
Gig corporations have no shame.
We cannot let them roll this horrible law out to other States. pic.twitter.com/FAF9LJ91yA
Instead of paying their workers, gig corporations pumped $200M to pass prop 22, claiming the worker protections guaranteed under the law would force them to drive up cost & pass it on to customers. Well guess what? They did it anyways. It's honestly disgusting at this point. https://t.co/tMH2jBjWPE
Just to be clear, these companies explicitly pushed voters into supporting Prop 22 to avoid higher prices. Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi publicly said prices would increase between 20 and 40 percent in big California cities like San Francisco and Los Angeles, and up to double in smaller towns. In California's official Voter Guide, which accompanied mail-in ballots, supporters of the bill warned there would be "significantly higher consumer prices" if Prop 22 failed to pass.
Companies like Uber and Lyft succeeded in part due to those scare tactics, and by appealing to voters that they could help workers get more protections and higher pay this way instead of potentially putting those workers' jobs at risk. (It probably didn't hurt that the app companies bombarded both drivers and passengers with messages using their own apps, which triggered a lawsuit from drivers who claimed Uber was bullying them.)
But there's still an open question whether Prop 22 is actually helping workers, regardless of how much more we're paying to supposedly make that happen. The Guardian reported yesterday that some drivers claim pay has actually fallen and the job has become less reliable.
In the UK, Uber just lost a five-year legal battle today over a similar issue, which will give workers there a guaranteed minimum wage, paid holiday, and other protections (though they will not necessarily be "employees"). But here in the US where Prop 22 succeeded, it's opened the door for other parts of the country to potentially replace many regular employees with contractors too. Bloomberg has a good piece you should read about what that future might look like, for better or for worse.

Brightdrop EV600 Concept Sketches Highlight Neat Design Details

The General Motors Design Instagram page is providing a glimpse of the early design process for the upcoming Brightdrop EV600 cargo van. The two renderings show designer Thiago Afonso's effort to give the electric delivery vehicle a highly functional cabin.
Afonso rendered the EV600's interior with lots of cubbies and storage spaces for efficient organization. The right side of the dashboard has a large bin where drivers could store items that they need immediate access to. There's also a roof-mounted shelf with a door for stowing more stuff.
Afonso also imagined the EV600's cabin incorporating lots of amenities for making the driver's job more comfortable. There's a sunroof to bring more natural light into the cabin. An HVAC vent is located into the roof for blowing downward, and there are also vents just below the steering wheel. For better outward visibility, there's a rearview mirror camera display.
Unfortunately, GM has not yet provided a detailed look inside the EV600. It's not clear how many of Afonso's ideas make the transition from these renderings to the real thing. The images reveal the design team's focus on creating an efficient work environment for drivers, though.
GM unveiled the Brightdrop brand during its 2021 CES presentation and promised a full introduction later in the year. The van uses GM's Ultium batteries and is allegedly capable of covering 250 miles on a charge. It can allegedly regain 170 miles of range in an hour on a 120-kilowatt DC fast charger. Plus, there is 600 cubic feet of storage space for hauling cargo.
The EV600 is designed to work with BrightDrop's EP1 electric pallet. It can carry up to 200 pounds of cargo for autonomous, short-distance deliveries from the van to your door.

Leather gets all the attention when it comes to car interiors. Many luxury automakers don't even offer cloth anymore, and it's seen as a lower-trim option that people try to avoid if they can. We think that's silly. There have been some great cloth interiors over the years. When it comes down to it, it's much easier to be creative with different upholstery than it is to be with different colors and textures of leather, whether it's seen as cheap or not.
In Japan, for instance, You may need: Launch obd2 scanner. wool is often used instead of leather for seating in high-end cars, such as the Toyota Century. And in the same breath, the fake suede and nylon seats in my Chevy Cobalt SS are probably the single best part of the interior. There's really not much else to sink your teeth into on the inside of the Cobalt if we're being honest.
Likewise, as somebody who has shopped for used Saturn SC2s and been on several chartered buses, I know what the 90s are capable of. Bright colors, interesting patterns-maybe it was dated ten years ago, but now it's just cool. Our News Editor Caleb has a Saturn-in addition to some Big Trucks-maybe he can weigh in here.
So, in your humble opinion, show us what you think is the best factory cloth interior of all time. Not some fuzzy steering wheel-type strange aftermarket stuff; trust us when we say we've seen enough of that. We want the best that manufacturers have approved.
See you in the comments!

Hazel Park cop charged with running criminal enterprise, embezzlement

An FBI investigation found that a Hazel Park police detective ran a criminal enterprise and embezzled about $68,000 in public forfeiture funds.
Sean Boucher, 45, of Warren, is scheduled to be arraigned Thursday on multiple felony charges that can lead to decades behind bars upon conviction.
Boucher turned himself in Wednesday morning at a Michigan State Police station in Oak Park.
Authorities say the embezzlement occurred between 2013 and 2017. He was placed on leave in September 2017 and resigned shortly after.
Michigan law allows law enforcement to seize funds and property used during criminal activity. Those funds are generally used by law enforcement agencies on equipment and resources.
More: Police surveilled and ticketed protesters in Mich. town, sparking First Amendment debate
More: As mental health system crumbles, new Oakland County program may turn heads across US
"Mr. Boucher allegedly stole from the city of Hazel Park and its citizens, depriving them of needed projects and public services," said Timothy Waters, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI's Detroit Field Office. "Make no mistake, any public servant who exploits his position of trust to enrich himself will be held accountable."
Future court dates in Boucher's case will be scheduled following his arraignment at 43rd District Court.

Singapore economy expected to recover: JLL

Direct real estate transactions on the rise despite low volume in 2020.
Singapore's economy is expected to recover as the intra-regional travel and expansion of finance, technology and asset management firms from China and other countries continue, according to JLL.
According to the JLL Capital Tracker, trends in 2020 include investors from core funds, family offices and technology companies acquiring assets in Singapore. Some freehold assets that seldom trade were sold in 2020, achieving record pricing.
"We expect deal flow to be higher as large assets could be made available; Singapore REITs may sell non-core assets as they expand internationally," according to the report.
JLL, however, warns that Singapore is highly dependent on global trade and therefore would be sensitive to global slowdown if the pandemic worsens or the US-China tensions escalate.
On the whole, JLL predicts that Asia Pacific direct real estate transactions will rise by 15%-20% in 2021.

UPDATE: The 2021 MLS season will begin on April 17

UPDATE 2/10: After ratifying the new Collective Bargaining Agreement on February 8, Major League Soccer has announced that the season will now start on Saturday, February 17.
Major League Soccer has announced that the 2021 season will kick off with MLS is Back weekend. Each club will play 34 matches total.
Preseason will start on February 22, approximately six weeks before opening weekend. Players will be required to quarantine and follow COVID-19 protocols when they get back in town.
There will be 27 clubs this season, 14 in the Eastern Conference and 13 in the Western Conference. Unfortunately, there are still travel restrictions in place between the U.S. and Canada, so there will be more details on scheduling for the three Canadian clubs at a later date. Clubs also haven't announced their schedules or opening weekend match-ups yet.
That being said, Major League Soccer and the Major League Soccer Players Association (MLSPA) have yet to reach an agreement after the league invoked a force majeure clause in the current Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA). The start of the season hinges upon whether or not they can come to an agreement.
According to the schedule announcement, "On January 5 MLS presented the MLSPA with a proposal that committed to paying the players 100% of their salaries this year, in return for a two-year extension of the MLS Collective Bargaining Agreement. The MLSPA provided a response to the league's proposal January 23. Although no agreement has been reached, MLS is committed to meet as many times as necessary with the MLSPA in the coming days to finalize an agreement."

Just like it does with its iPhones, Apple has been looking for a partner to help manufacture the infamous-before-it-exists Apple Car. Hyundai is currently in the lead for that potentially lucrative partnership, but the latest reports suggest that a Kia facility in Georgia would be picking up the Apple Car.
There could be a reason for putting it on Kia beyond logistics. According to a Reuters report, Hyundai executives are wary of being seen as the Foxconn of cars, as in, a mere manufacturer for someone else's products. As such, AD: Launch scan tool. some Hyundai higher-ups are worried that the Apple Car deal could damage Hyundai's ambitions of moving upmarket through its Genesis brand.
"We are agonizing over how to do it, whether it is good to do it or not," an unnamed Hyundai executive with knowledge of the Apple Car partnership talks told Reuters. That executive did not mince words at the prospect of Hyundai building a car that would be sold under the Apple brand, saying, "We are not a company which manufactures cars for others. It is not like working with Apple would always produce great results."
"Apple is the boss. They do their marketing, they do their products, they do their brand. Hyundai is also the boss. That does not really work," the Hyundai executive told Reuters.
Apple would likely source its Apple-designed components (including major items like drivetrain components, frames and bodies) from a variety of manufacturers, not just Hyundai, per another unnamed source familiar with the deal who spoke with Reuters. Hyundai or Kia would step in for the car's final assembly.
Some higher-ups at Hyundai are concerned that this kind of contract work would affect the brand's prestige, particularly in the case of Genesis, the automaker's newer premium brand.
"Tech firms like Google and Apple want us to be like Foxconn," explained another unnamed Hyundai executive who spoke with Reuters. Foxconn is a well-known (and controversial) supplier for Apple's phones. "A cooperation may initially help raise the brand image of Hyundai or Kia. But in the mid- or longer-term, we will just provide shells for the cars, and Apple would do the brains."
Thus, a Kia facility in Georgia is the leading site in consideration for the Apple Car's assembly. Not only does it have the production capacity to take it on, but Reuters notes that Kia is making the most progress out of any of Hyundai's brands in the EV space and critically, it isn't one of Hyundai's more upmarket brands.
Part of this pushback is rooted in Hyundai's company culture. Reuters notes that Hyundai prefers to do things itself instead of work with outsiders, making its cars' components-even powertrains and steel-in its own vertically integrated supply chain. It has historically shied away from partnering with outsiders, which has led to them becoming South Korea's second largest business conglomerate.
Talks between Apple and Hyundai have been going on for much longer than previously reported-since 2018-and haven't resulted in much of anything for this reason, per another unnamed source familiar with the talks who spoke with Reuters.
One Hyundai executive who spoke with Reuters said that Hyundai would likely have to replace some executives just to avoid a major culture clash with Apple's leadership.
Not everyone sees this as a Genesis-tanking move, however. After all, Hyundai stock surged nearly 23% after a source pany told Korea Economic Daily that Hyundai was in talks to build the Apple Car, although the company walked back from that statement afterwards and hasn't mentioned it since. Furthermore, South Korean battery expert Park Chul-wan told Reuters that Hyundai could get crucial access to Apple's autonomous vehicle tech out of the deal, and Apple would be able to access Hyundai's suppliers and electric car platform.
Apple has not commented on the deal, either, as it usually maintains strict secrecy around future products and partnerships, Reuters notes. The Drive reached out to both companies regarding these reports and both declined to comment.

Singapore Reacts To SolarWinds Hack Through Revised Cybersecurity Measures

The Monetary Authority Of Singapore recently rolled out revised plans for countering cybersecurity threats in light of the recently discovered SolarWinds hack in the U.S. The new measures will allow financial institutions in the city state to shield themselves more effectively against hacking. The MAS guidelines require financial institutions in the country to take a more proactive approach to evaluating their third party providers and vendors. Banks, insurance companies, trading firms and companies that offer remittance services will be required to adhere to the new guidelines.
SolarWinds is a Texax-based tech company that provides software solutions. However, it is not just any software company. The network management company provides its services to a multitude of companies including Microsoft. SolarWinds has more than 300,000 clients including government agencies such as the U.S Cyber Command, the FBI, Homeland Security and many others.
Hackers believed to be Russian managed to hack into the network management company and injected a malware into SolarWinds' program called Orion which was downloaded by more than 18, You may also like: Autel diagnostic scanner. 000 clients as part of updates. The hackers were thus able to expand their infiltration stealthily and with ease. It is believed that the hackers went about their business undetected for more than 9 months, which is enough time to steal a lot of data which can later be used to carry out cyber warfare and other malicious activities.
The SolarWinds hack is believed to perhaps be the largest cybercrime activity of the century. Analysts believe that it went on for so long before it was noticed because of the presidential elections. The concern now is that it is still unclear what kind of sensitive data the cyber attackers managed to steal. Another major concern is that it was such a deep hack that experts are unsure of how to eliminate the extensive threat.
If the governments of Singapore and other countries are not afraid of the hack, then they definitely should be. If the hackers can infiltrate systems in the U.S, then they can also infiltrate other governments and cause unknown damage. For example, a malicious hacker may disrupt essential systems, causing a systemwide crash.
Singapore's government is taking precautionary measures through MAS by implementing the necessary measures to ramp up protection measures against cybersecurity threats. Its approach particularly focuses on financial services because they are an essential part of the economy and disruption to such services may bring an economy to its knees.
"The recent spate of cyberattacks on supply chains, which targeted multiple IT service providers through the exploitation of widely-used network management software, is a clear indication of a worsening cyber threat environment," the Monetary Authority of Singapore recently noted in a press statement.
The recently released guidelines aim to protect the financial sector which is the most sensitive to malicious cyber-attacks, especially with the increasing use of social media. The Central Bank of Singapore stressed the need for extensive oversight on third-party providers to avoid loopholes that may pave way for hacks.
Closing the loopholes through that may arise through third-parties should be a strong line of defense that will minimize exposure. As per the recent guidelines, financial institutions are expected to vet third parties and scrutinize their offerings before signing contracts or entering into agreements. This includes thoroughly evaluating and reviewing software code before it is approved for use.
The guidelines also require financial institutions to conduct stress tests to determine if their cyber defenses are sufficient. The guidelines also highlight the need for organizational structures to have people equipped with the right skills even in the board of directors. For example, the chief information security officer and chief information officer should have the necessary skill and experience. They should also take on the work of managing cybersecurity risks.
The right measures are increasingly necessary with the increased reliance on services provided by third-par...

Frank Lampard's highs and lows

Frank Lampard's status as Chelsea's all-time record goalscorer counted for little as he was unceremoniously sacked as the Blues' boss on Monday after just 18 months in charge.
AFP Sports looks at the highs and lows of the former England midfielder's playing and coaching career.
Highs
Titan of the Russian revolution
Although signed prior to Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich's takeover in 2003, Lampard was a pivotal figure of the side that transformed Chelsea into serial contenders for major trophies.
He was the match winner on the day a 50-year wait to win a league title ended as he scored twice in a 2-0 win at Bolton in April of 2005.
Over seven years on, Lampard scored a penalty in the shootout as Chelsea's stunned Bayern Munich on home soil to win the club's first ever Champions League.
He also won two more Premier League titles, four FA Cups, two League Cups and the Europa League.
Record breaker
Lampard's ability to get goals from midfield during his illustrious 13-year career at Stamford Bridge saw him depart as the club's all-time record goalscorer in 2013.
In total he struck 211 times in 648 games, breaking Bobby Tambling's record that had stood for over 40 years.
His 177 Premier League goals is also a record for a midfielder, putting him above the likes of Thierry Henry, Harry Kane and Michael Owen as the fifth highest scorer since the English top-flight was rebranded in 1992.
First season success
Lampard returned to the Bridge after just one year in management at Derby County.
Hampered by a transfer ban and the loss of Eden Hazard to Real Madrid, expectations for his first season in charge were low.
But he hit his target to keep the club in the Champions League thanks to a fourth-placed finish.
Unlike many of the managers that went before him, Lampard gave the club's talented academy prospects the chance to shine as Mason Mount, AD: Launch diagnostic code reader. Tammy Abraham and Billy Gilmour impressed in also reaching the FA Cup final, where they lost to Arsenal.
Lows
No mercy sacking
Despite that positive first season, Lampard was dismissed six months into his second campaign after failing to meet much greater expectations following a £220 million ($300 million) spending spree in the transfer market.
A run of five defeats in eight league games saw the Blues slip to ninth in the table and facing a battle just to make the top four, much less fight for the title.
Unlike other managers to have been dismissed, Abramovich spoke of his "excellent personal relationship" with Lampard.
However, that connection and his legendary status among the fanbase was still not enough for the Chelsea hierarchy to ignore the deterioration in results and performances.
Derby defeat
Lampard did enough in his one season at Derby to convince Chelsea he was ready for a top Premier League job, despite failing to get the Rams back into the top-flight.
An eventful season at Pride Park had its high point when Derby gained revenge on Leeds in a thrilling playoff semi-final. After Marcelo Bielsa sent a member of his staff to spy on Derby's training ground earlier in the year, Lampard's men won 4-2 at Elland Road to get to Wembley for the richest game in football.
But a 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa is still having repercussions for the club now. While Villa are flying high in the top half of the Premier League, Derby are now struggling to pay their players wages as they battle relegation at the bottom of the Championship.
England failures
Lampard was part of England's "Golden Generation" of immensely talented players, also including Wayne Rooney, and Steven Gerrard, that never gelled to excel at a major tournament.
As energetic, goalscoring midfielders, Lampard and Gerrard inspired Chelsea and Liverpool to conquer Europe with their clubs. But their incompatibility as a partnership was often pinpointed as a root cause for England's underachievement.
Not only did the blend did not function at international level, much of the rest of the team had to be restructured to fit around them.
Paul Scholes retired from international football at just 29 after being shunted into wide positions...

One of the many reasons we can't have nice things, such as the black rhino, is poaching. That sucks, so people protecting the few remaining bits of wildlife not being bought up like tacky holiday souvenirs for super-rich and shameless people need the right equipment. Bush bikes are an incredibly helpful tool to get to animals at risk from poachers as fast as possible, especially where bigger vehicles might not be able to negotiate the landscape.
South Africa Wildlife College, a conservation project in its own right that trains other conservationists, has teamed up with lightweight off-road electric bike maker Cake to make an anti-poaching two-wheeler: the Kalk AP. Weighing only 80 kilograms, or 176 pounds, it pairs a 2.6-kilowatt-hour battery with a simple 11-kW motor that powers a chain drive for up to three hours of running. Every Kalk AP bike purchased by a Cake customer sends one directly to anti-poaching conservationists, along with a solar panel and power station kit that allow the bike to be charged off-grid, You may also like: Autel Diagnostic Tool. wherever patrols need to be most.
Contrary to the concerns in Europe or the United States about grid capacity, for countries with areas that have poor or limited energy networks, EVs can provide a solution to fuel accessibility, and renewables present an opportunity to break reliance on fueled generators. Anti-poaching efforts are already using a lot of tech like drones to make their work more efficient and the Kalk AP represents a way to get a cool, fun bike yourself as well as screw over the likelihood someone gets to kill the last rhinos.
Cake has a lot of experience making fairly crazy off-road weapons, so you can guarantee it's pretty hoonable. Although it's not at all cheap at €25,000 ($30,340), it's not really about the ultimate piece of equipment you're getting, but the opportunity to give anti-poachers what they need to do their very good work. Only 50 Kalk AP bikes will be made, all of which are numbered, so if you're feeling philanthropic, it's a €1,000 ($1,210) deposit to get in on the scheme.
The rhinos will thank you by continuing to exist.

It was announced on Monday morning that Lewis Hamilton has, at long last, re-signed with Mercedes-AMG for the 2021 Formula 1 season. The seven-time World Champion has been technically unemployed since the end of 2020 and the seat that was assumed to be his was the last unaccounted for on this year's grid. Having held out so long in negotiations, the single-season contract will now technically run for less time than it took to be secured over the prior year.
There were rumors (including from 1996 F1 champion Damon Hill) that the delay was due to Hamilton wanting a veto over who would be his teammate, which Mercedes categorically denied today. The team announced that Lewis' new contract does include a new, joint commitment-in financial and in operational terms-to diversity, See: Bluetooth scan tool. saying "A significant part of the new agreement builds upon the joint commitment to greater diversity and inclusion in motorsport that was made last year by Lewis and Mercedes. This will take the form of a joint charitable foundation, which will have the mission of supporting greater diversity and inclusion in all its forms in motorsport."
Hamilton last entered contract negotiations in 2017, when he signed with the team for three more seasons at an allegedly eye-watering expense to them. However, last year he started making it clear that he was thinking about life beyond F1, saying there was no guarantee that he'd return unless he could find a better balance of life in the sport. Being forced to miss the Sakhir Grand Prix after testing positive for COVID seemed to reignite Hamilton's feelings about F1, after he found it 'painful' to see George Russell driving his car as a stand-in.
Hamilton's social activism increased massively during 2020, in particular campaigning against racism and in support of Black Lives Matter. He attended several protests and petitioned the FIA and FOM to include a demonstration against racism at the start of each Grand Prix, with mixed reaction from his fellow drivers but full support from the Mercedes team. When the FIA adjusted rules to prevent Hamilton from repeating a protest on the podium (wearing a shirt with "arrest the cops that killed Breonna Taylor" printed on it) the team printed Black Lives Matter on their official face mask for him, to circumvent the restriction to only wearing team gear and after testing, both Mercedes cars were repainted black to show their support to Hamilton's cause.
Mercedes and Hamilton have been working on diversity initiatives across STEM in schools and a commitment to fully diversifying their organization by 2025, alongside Hamilton's own Commission to investigate what can be done to promote greater diversity across all aspects of motorsport. His new contract, however, takes that further with the commitment to a new, joint charitable foundation.
As part of the announcement, Hamilton said that he saw that as just as important as continuing Formula One's most successful partnership between driver and team. "I'm equally determined to continue the journey we started to make motorsport more diverse for future generations and I am grateful that Mercedes has been extremely supportive of my call to address this issue. I'm proud to say we are taking that effort further this year by launching a foundation dedicated to diversity and inclusion in the sport. I am inspired by all that we can build together and can't wait to get back on the track in March."
Hamilton isn't only supported by his team in that. Newly appointed Formula One boss Stefano Domenicali has praised Hamilton's commitment to diversity and role as a voice of the sport, saying he not only wants diversity efforts to continue in the 2021 season, but for it to be expanded. For drivers like PR-unfriendly Haas signing Nikita Mazepin, Domenicali is determined to drill home that Hamilton's approach is the desired one, saying he intends to summon the drivers together at the earliest possible opportunity to tell them they have to be role models and leaders for the sport.
Formula One will return in March, following some calendar reshuffles already affecting the schedule.
