Wayne State features Rashaun Rucker social commentary art on billboard

Taking a novel approach with featured artists during COVID-19, Wayne State University's art department has transitioned to non-traditional gallery exhibition venues for its current season.
A billboard, at the corner of Woodward and Canfield will display a work by one artist, per month through next spring for "In the Air: Voices From Detroit and Beyond." According to the exhibit website, the series features works by eight local and national artists "in response to the global pandemic and racial injustice."
This month's billboard, You may also like: Autel diagnostic scanner. "Resting in Black," was created by former Free Press deputy director of photo and video and locally based Kresge Artist Fellow Rashaun Rucker, whose drawings and prints make socially conscious commentary on the Black experience in America. The Detroit billboard features two black men, shoulder-to-shoulder, weighed down by worry.
"Black people never have the ability to rest, even in our so-called restful moments," said Rucker, a recipient of the prestigious Kresge Artist Fellowship. "We're always living in what I call this ‘between space,' the constant struggle between what we want to be, and what other people want us to be. The struggle is, do you live in that space, or do you (find a way to) make a space for yourself where you can live in your fullness?
"Say a Black man wants to buy a Mercedes," he said. "You automatically start thinking (things) like, ‘Am I going to get pulled over for driving a car like this?' Things like that are always hanging on you. ... I wanted the piece to reflect resting in Black, and trying to be our full selves."
A North Carolina native, Rucker moved to Detroit 17 years ago when he was hired as a photographer by the Free Press. The award-winning journalist left the newspaper last year to focus on his art full time, but his vast media experience continues to inform his current work.
"I'm a storyteller at heart," said Rucker, whose work is also on display at the Wallach Art Gallery (Uptown Triennial 2020) of Columbia University.
Many of Rucker's pieces involve birds, a theme inspired by conditioning and Black men, he says.
"Coming from photojournalism, research is also something that's big for me," he said, "and I learned pigeons are not native to America, and they're one of the few birds that don't migrate. They originated in Europe, Africa, Asia ... We're accustomed to seeing them all the time, but they're not native. They were brought here, and now they're stuck.
"The whole purpose of migration is to transition to a better environment," he continued. "But they can't do that, which creates what I call ‘psychological redlining.'
"We think of birds as symbols of freedom, but the pigeons don't know they can leave. There are people in Detroit who don't go to the other side of town, don't go to this or that place, because they believe they don't belong there. But who says so? It's just the conditioning."

Ornithologists, he said, consider American pigeons to be feral. "People brought pigeons over here, and now people hate pigeons," he said.
"White people brought Black people here, and they got what they wanted. Once that was done, and there was no longer any use for us, they detested us. So, for me the pigeons in my pieces are about, ‘What do you do with something when it's no longer wanted?'"
A series of Rucker's pigeon-themed paintings are currently on display in "Contemplation of Flight," a sold-out solo exhibition at Miami's N'Namdi Contemporary gallery. An artist's discussion video can be viewed on the gallery's Instagram page.
Rucker now looks ahead to a 2021 exhibition about his native North Carolina -the show titled "Up from the Red Clay" will be held at M Contemporary Art in Ferndale and is inspired by his family and his time growing up there - followed by a fall '21 artist residency at the University of Michigan, in their Institute for the Humanities.
"I want to teach," he said, "preferably at a ...

Fact or fiction? UK govt says 'The Crown' should be clear

LONDON (AP) - Britain's culture minister thinks the Netflix TV series "The Crown" should come with a disclaimer: It's a work of fiction.
Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden weighed in amid criticism of the historical liberties taken by the drama about the British royal family.
"It's a beautifully produced work of fiction. So as with other TV productions, Netflix should be very clear at the beginning it is just that," Dowden told the Mail on Sunday newspaper. "Without this, I fear a generation of viewers who did not live through these events may mistake fiction for fact."
Dowden is expected to write to Netflix this week to express his view. Netflix did not immediately respond to a request for comment from The Associated Press.
Questions of historical fidelity were not a major issue during earlier seasons of the show, which debuted in 2016 and traces the long reign of Queen Elizabeth II, which began in 1952.
But the current fourth season is set in the 1980s, a divisive decade that many Britons remember vividly. Characters include Conservative Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, whose 11-year tenure transformed and divided Britain, and the late Princess Diana, You may need: Autel car diagnostic. whose death in a car crash in 1997 traumatized the nation.
Former royal press secretary Dickie Arbiter has called the series a "hatchet job" on Prince Charles, the heir to the British throne, and his first wife Diana. The troubled relationship of the couple, played by Josh O'Connor and Emma Corrin, is a major storyline in the series.
Diana's brother, Charles Spencer, has also said the show should carry a notice that "this isn't true but it is based around some real events."
"I worry people do think that this is gospel and that's unfair," he told broadcaster ITV.
Some Conservatives have criticized the program's depiction of Thatcher, played by Gillian Anderson. Britain's first female prime minister, who died in 2013, is portrayed as clashing with Olivia Colman's Elizabeth to an extent that some say is exaggerated.
"The Crown" creator Peter Morgan, whose work also includes recent-history dramas "The Queen" and "Frost/Nixon," has defended his work, saying it is thoroughly researched and true in spirit.
In a 2017 discussion of "The Crown," Morgan said "you sometimes have to forsake accuracy, but you must never forsake truth."
Steven Fielding, a professor of political history at the University of Nottingham, said the suggestion that "The Crown" carry a disclaimer was "reasonable and yet pointless."
"It invariably doesn't have an effect," he said. "There are studies that show that people believe fiction when it's presented as fact - even if you tell them it's not fact."
Fielding said it was no surprise that Charles and his allies were annoyed with the heir to the throne's depiction as "a bit of an idiot." But he said making a fuss about it only amplifies the attention.
Historians are used to railing at inaccuracies in dramas such as the Academy Award-winning "Darkest Hour," which included an invented scene of Winston Churchill meeting ordinary Londoners on an Underground Tube train during World War II.
"Mixing historical fact and fiction has been around since Shakespeare. This is not new to films, it's not new to TV," said Fielding, co-author of "The Churchill Myths," which examines Britain's wartime leader in popular culture.
"I don't recall the culture secretary complaining about the ridiculous presentation of Winston Churchill in 'Darkest Hour," he said. "Because it went with the myth, with the idea of Churchill the hero, nobody complained."
"Nobody's bothered if fact and fiction are all mangled up, so long as it's saying nice things," he added.

Formula 1 Adopts Women-Only 'W Series' for Support Races in 2021

Conceived as a way to give women a leg up through the junior ranks of motorsport, the women-only Formula 3 category W Series has been the subject of dispute since day one. Its critics haven't exclusively been jealous men, either; women with established racing careers such as Pippa Mann and Tatiana Calderon have scorned the series as a "step backward." In spite of this, though, the seemingly controversy-keen Formula 1 aligned itself with the series, announcing Thursday that W Series will run among its support categories starting in 2021.
F1 declared W Series will become a staple of its support categories, which include the likes of the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup and Ferrari Challenge, "for 2021 and beyond," signaling years of W Series support races to come. 2021's calendar of up to 23 Grands Prix will feature eight such support events.
Which races will host W Series have yet to be announced, See: Autel Diagnostic Tool. though F1 could theoretically use the category as a shield to deflect criticism stemming from its addition of Saudi Arabia to the 2021 race calendar.
Campaigning W Series there and in other countries that deny women the rights it grants men could silence western critics, though it would come at the cost of provoking conservative locals, something that F1 seems unwilling to do. Kristen Stewart Feels 'Protective' of Princess Diana as She Prepares to Play Her in Upcoming Film

Kristen Stewart wants to do Princess Diana's story justice.
The actress appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live on Tuesday, where she opened up about her new film, Happiest Season, as well as preparing to play the late Princess of Wales in an upcoming biopic, You may also like: TPMS Programming Tool. Spencer.
"It's hard not to feel protective of her," she said of Diana. "She was so young."
Stewart, who was just seven years old when the royal icon died in a car accident in Paris in August 1997, admitted she "didn't know what was going on" at the time, though she remembers seeing the flowers and mourners that gathered outside Buckingham Palace in the days after Diana's death.
"I didn't grow up with her maybe in the same way, I was really young when she passed away," the actress noted. "I feel sort of the same way about her. It happened really quickly."

While parts of Diana's story have been told on film and television several times since her death -- most recently in the fourth season ofThe Crown-- Spencer, from Jackie director Pablo Larraín, will focus on three days of the princess' short life, as she faces the end of her marriage to Prince Charles while spending Christmas at Queen Elizabeth's Sandringham estate in the 1990s. (Based on the timeframe, Prince William and Prince Harry would still be young boys in the film.)
"My movie takes place over three days, and it's this really poetic internal imagining of what that might have felt like rather than giving new information," Stewart explained. "We kind of don't have a mark to hit, we just also love her."
The actress previously admitted that she was finding Diana's accent "intimidating as all hell" in an interview with InStyle. "People know that voice, and it's so, so distinct and particular... I'm working on it now and already have my dialect coach."
She also said she was doing plenty of research for the role, reading multiple biographies and books on the late Princess of Wales.
"It's one of the saddest stories to exist ever, and I don't want to just play Diana - I want to know her implicitly," Stewart said. "I haven't been this excited about playing a part, by the way, in so long."
See more on Diana's on-screen portrayals in the video below.

Slovenia’s first electric transporter is a MAN eTGE

In early November, Henkel Maribor d.o.o. took possession of a MAN eTGE electric transporter, thus setting a milestone in distribution and delivery logistics in Slovenia. That's because the vehicle is Slovenia's first fully electric transporter in the 3-6-tonne segment. The eTGE will be deployed in the technical supply department of the consumer goods manufacturer's Slovenian subsidiary, where it will primarily be used to transport consumables and deliver samples to various institutions. Switching from a diesel-powered to an electric transporter will enable Henkel Maribor to cut its CO2 emissions by 1.5 to 2 tonnes a year. The first electric transporter in its fleet is setting the company on the road to an electric future.
"At Henkel Maribor, we are fully committed to our sustainability strategy, which we are pursuing at every level of our business. We are extremely proud to be the first company in Slovenia to add an electricity-driven transporter to our fleet. The MAN eTGE electric transporter is our way of proving that the use of electronic vehicles in logistics brings many advantages, You may need: Autel car diagnostic. not least since it represents an enormous step towards a sustainable future," says Christof Vollstedt, the Managing Director of Henkel Maribor d.o.o.
According to statistical surveys, 70% of the city's light commercial vehicles cover less than 100 kilometres a day. The MAN eTGE is therefore the perfect solution for environmentally friendly, quiet transportation in urban areas. Its range of up to 140 kilometres in city traffic (115 km according to the WLTP cycle) suffices for most purposes in town. The extensive standard configuration of the eTGE also makes it particularly suitable for urban use: the MAN electric transporter has an active Lane Guard System, a front and rear parking assistant as well as a side wall protection system, a "ComfortPlus" driver's seat, Climatronic air-conditioning system, multifunction steering wheel, Emergency Brake Assist, LED main headlights and daytime driving lights, MAN Media Van Navigation and a rear-view camera as well as an eight-year guarantee on its batteries.
Claus Wallenstein, Managing Director at MAN Truck & Bus Slovenia, points to another key reason for the success of the MAN eTGE: "If you take into account the much lower operating costs, especially with regard to energy and maintenance, as well as the available subsidies, the overall cost of this award-winning electric transporter is no higher than that of the diesel version."

What It Means For Today’s Millennials To Have A Voice, In A World Of Flux

We've been labelled the "lost generation".
A global pandemic. Record unemployment. Life plans shelved. Dreams disrupted. This is the way 2020 ends; not with a bang, but with a whimper.
With no end to the Covid-19 crisis in sight, one thing's clear: it has become critical for us youths to step up and take charge of our own narratives-to have a voice, and to use this voice to shape our present and future.
Take the sheer power of the vote, as we've witnessed in a year dominated by watershed elections abroad and at home. In the recent United States presidential election, surging youth voter turnout propelled Joe Biden to a decisive victory. In Singapore's July general election, young voters who desired to see diverse voices and more checks and balances in parliament lifted the opposition to its best-ever showing.
Voting is a right; a deliberate exercise in political participation. Yet surely it isn't the only way for us to have our voices heard. How our generation chooses to make a political statement can vary in form, You may need: Bluetooth code reader. measure and tangibility. Some prefer the covert, starting by influencing social circles within reach. Others head to the streets in mass movements. Others take to the web.
But democracy is not a universal privilege-it's a loaded concept that exists in spades and shades, all too often accompanied by caveats. For the disenfranchised trapped in environments besieged by violence, state censorship, or an erosion of basic human rights, it's a daily battle spent fighting for causes held dear, through whatever channels available.
Therein lies the question: when the odds are against us, through what other unconventional and unique means can we youths of today manifest our voices? And with our voices, how much of a difference can we truly make-whether as individuals, or as a whole-in challenging the existing order, within a shifting global landscape fraught with uncertainty?
These women no longer recognise the present Hong Kong, which has been gradually silenced by Chinese Communist authorities determined to end the city's semi-autonomous status. Unable to return home to physically partake in pro-democracy protests, how else can these four individuals, in their personal capacities, help their motherland reclaim its lost voice?
The first step is to revisit Hong Kong's colonial history, a process that can paradoxically only be carried out in London rather than at home, as the city does not have a public archives law that grants its citizens access to important political documents.
By sifting through and decoding Hong Kong's archives released by the United Kingdom, the volunteers interviewed in Home, and a Distant Archive unearth how the former British colony's past, present and future intersect in ways that few of their countrymen have been privy to, in the hopes of understanding how, and why, Hong Kong came to be the way it is today.
"If you don't know about your past, what we have done right or wrong, how can you reposition or reshape the future?" she asks.
It's a cogent statement that underscores the importance of translating the learnings from the city's bygone era for-and to-the future, in order to empower successive generations of citizens to rebuild Hong Kong's fractured identity, to help their motherland find its voice back.
At its core, Home, and a Distant Archive is a meditation on the complexities of national identity and migration among the Hong Kong diaspora. Cheung elegantly juxtaposes anecdotes from her interviewees with her own personal narration, as a London-based Hong Konger struggling to articulate her conflicted emotions about a city that she is geographically alienated from.
"I seldom think about my sentiments towards this place," she muses.
"Even if I like it, it is hard to say out loud."
Decoding Hong Kong's colonial history has ultimately been an avenue for these diaspora to confront, and reconcile, a fragmented and nebulous relationship with a homeland they feel guilty for forsaking, at a time of great political upheaval.
Handwritten posters-known as daejobo in South Korea-have become increasingly popular with t...

Chrysler Has a New 'Merger of Equals' With PSA 13 Years After Their Last One With Mercedes Failed

If there's one phrase that makes Jeep, Dodge, Chrysler and/or Ram fans sweat a little-if not immediately feel a bit of vomit rise up in their throat-it's definitely "merger of equals." Chrysler's so-called "merger of equals" with Mercedes-Benz parent company Daimler was such a flop that it's become a cautionary tale about culture clashes in business.
Now, just 13 years after that highly unequal merger of equals failed spectacularly, that phrase appeared in the most unsettling place possible place: in recently filed documents concerning Fiat Chrysler Automobiles' upcoming merger with Peugeot parent company Groupe PSA.
According to documents obtained by Automotive News, what's being described as a (shudder) merger of equals is technically a purchase by PSA of FCA for accounting purposes. That crucial detail was disclosed in a prospectus filed by FCA with Euronext Paris and Mercato Telematico Azionario in order to list shares of the new merged FCA-PSA entity, Stellantis, on those two stock exchanges. The same document was also filed with the United States Securities and Exchange Commission.
The prospectus outlined several things to back up PSA's purchase, namely, that six of the 11 Stellantis board directors will be appointed by PSA, You may also like: Autel diagnostic scanner. PSA shareholders will pay a pre-merger premium, and current Groupe PSA CEO and president of its managing board Carlos Tavares will serve as Stellantis' first CEO. The initial Stellantis board terms will last four years, and Tavares has a five-year term as Stellantis' CEO.
The Agnelli family, who is currently the largest shareholder in FCA, will still have the largest share of Stellantis after the merger at 14.4% of the merged entity, Automotive News notes. However, the second, third and fourth largest shareholders-the Peugeot family, the French government and Dongfeng-will have a combined 19% of Stellantis.
There is one part where FCA is taking, the lead, however. FCA's Dutch holding company, FCA N.V. will also absorb the PSA Group from a legal standpoint and take on the name Stellantis N.V.
"We have decided together on the most efficient financial and legal foundations to build Stellantis in the long term," read a PSA statement quoted by Automotive News.
Between the who's-purchasing-who details and that phrase popping back up, it's hard not to be concerned that FCA will be the lesser "equal" in this deal, not unlike pre-FCA Chrysler was within DaimlerChrysler. "Merger of equals," as Automotive News notes, isn't a legal, binding term.
To say that the DaimlerChrysler era isn't remembered fondly is a massive understatement. Daimler's executives quickly established dominance over Chrysler's. Automotive News did an oral history of the original merger of equals era here that's worth the read. Daimler's co-CEO lighting up a cigarette in his office on the first day-against Chrysler's no-smoking policy-and then singlehandedly declaring the floor he shared with Chrysler's co-CEO a smoking floor captures the vibe pretty well.
The DaimlerChrysler era resulted in cost-cutting measures that decimated the Chrysler side, cheapening interior materials, axing competitive features and resulting in some truly steaming turds like the Dodge Avenger and the original Jeep Compass.
However, the future Stellantis group maintains that this time it will be different.
"As we have always made clear, Stellantis will be the result of a 50:50 combination of FCA and Groupe PSA," an FCA spokesman told Automotive News.
Godspeed, you two wacky companies. Just don't crank out Playskool-esque interiors and decades-old four-speed transmissions to prop up the European half this time.
You can read the full prospectus on FCA's website here.

Jerami Grant to Detroit Pistons stunned, but here is what he brings

The Detroit Pistons were expected to be active in NBA free agency. They began last week as one of the NBA's handful of teams with significant cap space, positioning them to make a major swing. Christian Wood seemed like a probable option to re-sign after a strong finish to last season, and top free agents such as Fred VanVleet were possibilities.
Instead, Detroit handed a three-year, $60 million contract to Jerami Grant in a sign-and-trade with the Denver Nuggets, where he was largely a bench player last season, Autel mk908p
. and wasn't projected to sign a deal that large. The Pistons also acquired the draft rights to Nikola Radicevic (the 57th pick in the 2015 draft) in exchange for cash considerations, as the Nuggets opened up a massive trade exception.
But after a strong performance in the Orlando bubble, Grant was due for a pay raise. He was the Nuggets' best defender in the playoffs, handling everyone from LeBron James and Anthony Davis to Kawhi Leonard. He declined his $9.3 million player option for the 2020-21 season, an indicator he and his agent were confident his market value had risen.
[ Sorting through Pistons' wild and confusing moves in free agency ]
A link has been posted to your Facebook feed.
They were right, since the Pistons more than doubled his annual salary. It was a surprising move for a team that hasn't won a playoff game since 2008, and has more pressing roster needs than figuring out how to slow down the NBA's most dangerous scorers deep in the playoffs. Grant's versatility on defense is rivaled by few players, and he has become a strong shooter the past two seasons. He raises the Pistons' talent. To live up to his contract, he'll need to do more.
He could become a good-value contract, as there are few players in the NBA who can shoot and defend as well as Grant can. He's 26 and has improved immensely through six seasons. General manager Troy Weaver appears to believe there's more to Grant's game.
Considering he left a contending Nuggets team for a bigger role with the Pistons, it appears Grant thinks so too. And he'll be in the spotlight this season, as he carries the distinction of being Weaver's first free agency splash. After two strong seasons as a high-level role player on playoff teams, he has an opportunity to prove he can be a foundational piece for a rebuilding team hoping to eventually get to that level.
[ After a prolific week, it's clear Troy Weaver is shaping Pistons his way ]
Grant averaged 12 points, 3.5 rebounds and 0.8 blocks per game last season and drained 38.9% (98-for-252) of his 3-point attempts - a strong percentage. He shot 39.2% from 3 the prior season on a similar number of attempts (115-for-293). After not being much of an outside threat during his first four seasons in the NBA, it's become his most dangerous offensive weapon. He has taken 545 attempts during the past two seasons, after taking 528 during his first four and making 30.1%.
He's also a good finisher at the rim. But overall, he isn't as versatile on offense as he is on defense. He doesn't create for himself between the rim and 3-point line, as 84% of his made shots last season were assisted, per Cleaning The Glass.
Grant thrived as a catch-and-shoot player, with Nikola Jokic, Jamal Murray and Monte Morris working to create open looks. But when he gets a step on his defender, he's capable of quickly bursting to the rim. He doesn't create for others: His 6.7% assist rate is poor, even for a forward.
Detroit Pistons headlines from Freep.com, delivered every day at 5:30 a.m.
Grant also isn't a strong rebounder, grabbing 10.1% of opponent's missed shots while on the floor last season, and 3.2% of the available offensive rebounds. For comparison, Wood grabbed 20.9% and 7.9%, respectively - both healthy marks for a big man.
[ Pistons' free agency moves: What people are saying ]
But what separates Grant and made him eligible for a massive pay raise is his defense. In a league where having good multi-positional defenders is a must for contendi...

Fast & Furious Director Reveals the Film's Biggest Errors You Never Caught

Rob Cohen, director of the first Fast & Furious movie aimed to be as authentic as possible with technical details of the movie. However, according to the movie's technical director Craig Lieberman, Cohen reportedly said that the "movie was not meant to appeal to gearheads. It was made to attract audiences who like action movies." Now, Lieberman's newest video exposes some of the film's biggest technical errors.
As we've covered before, Lieberman helped with finding the cars, the parts, You may need: Launch obd2 scanner. and extras for various scenes. At the time, he was deeply immersed in the import street racing scene and was well connected, which benefited Universal Studios. Nowadays, he's a YouTuber with a fervent passion for not only the Fast & Furious franchise but for technical perfection. He has owned more than 40 cars including a Supra, GT-R, and Maxima that played starring roles in the first movie.
For instance, one of the errors that Lieberman covers is where a truck follows a Supra with a white bumper. Nobody called it out until just this year, Lieberman says, but it was actually a Miata bumper on the roof, not a Supra bumper.
As a technical advisor, Lieberman had a chance to review the script and make recommendations for changes, but as he notes in his video, "I gave advice; they didn't always take it."
The net result is that some scenes wouldn't be feasible in real life and some of them are just pure drama for the fun of it. But only the most ardent tuner superfans would pick them out.
For example, in the opening sequence during a truck hijacking, the lead Honda Civic has a double-decker rear wing. Then you'll see later in the scene that it has a single wing; the second airfoil was removed to keep the stuntman from getting tangled up in it. Further, that same Civic slides under a semi-trailer as part of the plan, which would not be possible in real life. To help viewers suspend disbelief, the truck was custom made to be an extra 18 inches off the ground. Now you know.
I particularly enjoyed the explanations about what nitrous oxide does and what it doesn't-and the improbability of the massive nitrous Mitsubishi Eclipse explosion. "You don't have two nitrous systems on a wheezy naturally aspirated stock block 428 Eclipse," Lieberman scoffs in the video.
If you prefer your movie magic to be complete immersion, don't watch this. Personally, I'd recommend you listen to all of the delicious details, and here's Lieberman's video explaining it all.

Nissan updated its Titan pickup for the 2020 model year, but that may not be the only change coming. A new report from Bloomberg says the automaker is looking at a Motor City EV startup to help electrify the full-size pickup. The company, Hercules Electric Vehicles, introduced its own electric pickup called the Alpha back in May and would allegedly supply Nissan with an electric powertrain in exchange for parts for its own pickup.
Titan sales fell 37.5 percent in 2019, selling just 31, You may also like: Autel MaxiDiag MD806. 514 examples of the truck, and 2020 isn't looking much better. CarSalesBase reports that Nissan has sold fewer than 20,000 Titans through September, and it's unclear if an electrified powertrain would help juice sales. Automakers are rushing to offer premium EV pickups, though no one knows if there will be enough buyers to support all the players. Nissan's ambitious turnaround plan likely means cash is tight, so seeking a partner for an electric powertrain makes sense.
When Nissan announced its roadmap this spring to revitalize its lineup, the company promised to introduce 12 models over the next 18 months. There wasn't any indication that the Titan would be one of those fresh new offerings. According to Bloomberg's sources, described as "people familiar with the matter," there's still the chance that the two may not reach a deal at all.
The next few years will be populated with stories of automakers, startups, and others vying for a piece of our electrified future. Pickup trucks are appearing to play a vital role in automakers' electrification efforts. Ford, GM, Tesla, Rivian, and others are readying such products in anticipation and hope. The Nissan Titan already struggles against the Big Three domestic players, but Nissan will need to find a way to match what they offer if it wants to remain competitive.

89X ends 30-year rock run, becomes Pure Country 89

The long rock run has ended for 89X, on a transformative day across the local radio dial.
With the fittingly titled Jane's Addiction song "Stop!" - the same track that launched the Windsor station's rock era in 1990 - CIMX-FM (88.7) officially capped its three-decade legacy of alternative music and active rock.
Just after noon Thursday, a promo segment introduced the station's new identity: Pure Country 89. A voiceover announced a $10,000 cash giveaway and the promise of 10,000 consecutive songs out of the gate, as Florida Georgia Line's "Cruise" kicked off the new format, which looks to be hits-heavy country music.
Up the FM dial at sister station and fellow Bell Media property 93.9, long an adult-alternative station known as the River, another switch went down: Closing the River era with Coldplay's "Clocks," the rebooted format was unveiled as 93.9 Virgin Radio, with Dua Lipa's "Don't Start Now" inaugurating a new contemporary-hits format, followed by the reigning No. 1 song in the U.S.: "Mood" by 24kGoldn featuring Iann Dior.
Meanwhile, Entercom-owned WDZH-FM - known as 98.7 the Breeze since 2018 - dropped its light-adult pop format to become ALT 98.7. An Entercom release said the station will play modern and classic alternative rock, highlighting "artists like the White Stripes, Cage the Elephant, Imagine Dragons and the Black Keys."
ALT 98.7 announced its own 10,000-song, commercial-free rollout.
Tim Roberts, Entercom's vice president of programming for the Detroit region, said the station will ultimately include local on-air staff. And he sounded a note of confidence about the format move, emphasizing the mix of new and older music.
"We're filling a need in the market," said Roberts. "Clearly there's an appetite for this music here."
While declining to provide details about the run-up to the 98.7 switch, Roberts indicated he'd known of 89X's Thursday plans.
Updates on how the coronavirus is affecting your community and the nation
"It certainly created an opportunity," he said.
Pure Country 89 becomes the third major country player serving the Detroit market, joining longtime heavyweight WYCD-FM (99.5) and WDRQ-FM (93.1). It's the latest in a series of Pure Country-branded outlets across Canada.
89X had signaled its looming demise with an online announcement Wednesday, even telling current listeners they probably wouldn't like the yet-undisclosed format change.
89X rode high during the glory days of alternative rock in the 1990s, and transitioned during the 2000s into the heavier-edged format known as active rock.
Once a ubiquitous presence in the Detroit music world - with regular promotional events, venue tie-ins and its own concerts - the station's impact dwindled in recent years, much like active-rock outlets elsewhere. 89X closed its Detroit sales branch in 2017.
Detroit Free Press staff writer Brendel Hightower contributed to this report.

Audi Q4 E-Tron Spied Under Development In Sweden

The Audi Q4 E-Tron once again finds itself in front of the cameras of our spy photographers. The electric crossover goes on sale in 2021, and the company is giving it extensive development on the road, based on how often we are seeing it.
This time the Q4 E-Tron is on the road in Sweden. The exterior design is very similar to the original concept. The front end appears to have smaller inlets in the corners than the show car, but the lower opening in the fascia is bigger. The headlights in the upper corners have a jagged shape.
There's a steeply angled windshield that leads to a gently flowing roofline. If you want an even sleeker shape, the Sportback version is also on the way. The camouflage conceals the styling along the flanks, but judging from the concept, there's probably smooth sculpting there.
The hatchback's glass is slanted, and there are skinny taillights below it. On the concept, Audi uses contrasting colors and textures for the lower part of the bumper to keep the area from being too boring.
Other spy shots show the Q4 E-Tron's cabin. The driver looks at a digital instrument cluster, and there's a fairly large, You may also like: obd2 scanner. rectangular infotainment screen next to it. The rest of the interior is still under cover.
The Q4 E-Tron shares the MEB platform for the Volkswagen ID.4. The exact powertrain is still a mystery, but the concept has 301 horsepower (225 kilowatts) and an 82-kilowatt-hour battery.
A debut date for the Q4 E-Tron isn't yet known. It's possible that the unveiling could be before the end of the year. The Q4 E-Tron Sportback probably arrives a little later.

UK government considers road pricing to cover EV tax shortfall

Are you considering buying an electric car?
A long-rumoured roads pricing scheme is being considered by the UK government to help fill the tax shortfall caused by the gradual switch to electric cars, The Times is reporting.

The paper claimsthat chancellor Rishi Sunak has received a Treasury paper for a nationwide road pricing scheme. He is said to be "very interested" in the idea , which would be required to help balance out the expected loss of up to £40 billion of tax revenue from fuel duty and vehicle excise duty.

The report comes as the government is this week expected to announce that theproposed ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel carswill be brought forward to 2030. That's substantially sooner than the current 2040 proposal, but new hybrids will be able to use combustion engines until 2035.

Although the scheme is said to be not "imminent" by a government source speaking to The Times, it is described as an "increasingly pressing" issue for the Treasury. It has outlined potential options for road pricing in an analysis report, but it seems no decision has been made.

In October 2019, the cross-party House of Commons Transport Select Committeepledged that it would start "a national debate"over the introduction of potential pay-per-mile road pricing schemes. A Labour government first considered road pricing 13 years ago, but plans were dropped over fears of a public backlash.

A prime example of how a national road pricing scheme could operate is seen on the M6 toll road in the West Midlands. To access the road, cars must pay a daily £6.70 fee for weekdays, AD: Bluetooth obd2. with a £12 fee for HGVs. Congestion charging in central London has already been expanded, with a second charge added in 2019 to further penalise the most polluting cars.

Commenting on the report, RAC head of roads policy Nicholas Lyes said "While not paying car tax is clearly an incentive to go fully electric at the moment, we will very soon need a system that can levy tax on both conventionally fuelled and battery electric vehicles fairly. If this isn't addressed, we risk finding ourselves in a situation where petrol and diesel drivers continue to pay all the tax for using the roads which is unsustainable."
Bound to happen, all that Road Tax, how were they going to replace it?
He needs to pay for HS2 somehow and justify that waste of money (Covid showed very few people actually need to save 15 mins on travelling from Leeds to London for a meeting, yet still they force HS2). By making driving very expensive regardless of fuel type, more people will use HS2 and therefore it will be shown a success!!
He needs to pay for HS2 somehow and justify that waste of money
I can imagine them making new cars carry the tech to record mileage.....although would this be an International move?...... but it would be a hard sell to get the millions of people with existing vehicles to install at their own expense to then incur extra fiscal burden.
Then there is the data privacy issue.....no government dept. has proved themselves trustworthy with personal data.....good luck with that one.
Then the issue of is this road sensor logged or via satellite. What happens when cars pass under trees, through deep valleys and tunnels.

I guess the price of a litre of petrol will then drop to around 35p per litre?????
at what point would that happen - otherwise you would be paying twice?
The logical thing would be to continue with the current system for IC vehicles and bring in road charging for new electric vehicles that don't pay tax on fuel.
It would take 5+ years to get the system running and would it really be worth retro fitting to all IC engined cars.
How far back would they go, would classics be exempt?
While it makes sense that people using the road more should pay more towards its maintenance, as has been mentioned above this is a ridiculous solution. Should people who are more sick pay more towards the NHS?
- How are they going to track this while not violating people's privacy and human rights? I absolutely object to having an insurance black box in my car and this is unacceptable to me for the same reasons. This will b...

2021 Formula 1 Schedule Returns to Normal With 23-Race Season Starting in March

Though forced into a condensed 2020 calendar, Formula 1 is hopeful that the storm that is COVID-19 will pass by the Spring of 2021. It made this clear with the announcement of its 2021 season calendar, which will commence in Australia the day after Spring Solstice on March 21.
F1's 2021 race calendar could feature a record 23 events, mostly comprised of returning favorites with no one-off circuits like the hastily cobbled-together 2020 schedule. There will still be plenty of novelty, however, as the Dutch Grand Prix will be hosted at Circuit Zandvoort for the first time since 1983, and despite protests over the state's flagrant human rights abuses, Saudi Arabia has cajoled its way into a slot. Widespread boycotts of the race, however, AD: Autel TPMS sensor. are expected.
Despite plans to introduce Vietnam to the F1 calendar this year, the Asian nation is again absent from 2021's schedule, as the government official who backed the race are being arrested on charges of corruption, per the BBC. Spain and Brazil are also under threat of falling off the wagon; Circuit de Catalunya's reprisal of its role in 2020 was on a one-year contract, and F1's longtime Brazilian Grand Prix venue at Interlagos has in recent years become unfavorable for fans, teams, and officials alike.
High crime (sometimes impacting teams), poor accommodations, and pressure from within Brazil could see the event canceled or relocated, the latter involving a move to a track near Rio de Janeiro. As construction of the replacement circuit is not yet complete, though, F1's Brazil choices appear to be Interlagos or nothing for the time being. And there's no guarantee it won't pick the latter.

North Korea May Be Training Dolphins for Its Navy | IE

North Korea is an extremely secretive country. But one thing that's emerging now about the nation is that it may be training and using dolphins as part of its naval program.
A report published by the non-profit U.S. Naval Institute (USNI) stated the news that included satellite images of the potential naval dolphins' pens.
The images clearly depict naval mammal pens floating in North Korean waters in close proximity to its warships and a shipyard.
SEE ALSO: LIFE-LIKE ROBOTIC DOLPHIN TO OVERHAUL MARINE CAPTIVITY INDUSTRY
Some of the photos the USNI got a hold of date back to 2015, and show a clear contrast with those snapped in 2019 and 2020.
There appear to be two Dolphin Program bases, and the second one may be where the aquatic mammals are bred. There are also covered pools, open pools, and dolphin pens out in the water, See: diagnostic code reader. per what the photos show.
It may sound like a strange strategy, using dolphins for military purposes. However, the U.S. Navy was the one to pioneer such a method. And they don't solely stick to dolphins, either, they are also known for using sea lions. The Navy uses these mammals to spot mines or any enemy swimmers, for example.
As far as is known, Russia is the only other country aside from the U.S. to use such methods. Until now, when North Korea may also be joining their ranks.
These photographed pens may not have anything to do with the Navy, however, and could simply be fish farms, reports the New York Post.
However, these pens don't exactly match the other fish farms from the country. When USNI compared the North Korean pens with the U.S. and Russian dolphin ones, they matched up, according to the report. So maybe we will be seeing North Korean military dolphins in the near future.

Videos of New Xbox Series X Consoles Spouting Smoke Go Viral | IE

Owning a brand new console is always an exciting time. But with that comes the typical early-adopters launch issues, something to be expected.
What wasn't expected, though, was for Microsoft's latest next-gen console, the Xbox Series X, See: autel maxitpms. to end up in smoke. Just a few short days after its release, videos of the Xbox Series X with smoke billowing out of it have been widely circulating on the Internet.
Much panic and worry have ensued, but there's no need for that. It turns out that these are just internet trolls vaping into their consoles. Too much time spent in self-isolation, perhaps?
SEE ALSO: MICROSOFT DEBUTS HALO INFINITE GAMEPLAY, XBOX SERIES X, AND MORE
The smoky videos of Xbox Series X's seemingly about to blow up are just a trick that many have been playing from their homes.
What's actually been happening is that people have been blowing vape smoke into their consoles, which makes them look like they're about to catch fire.
The trick was uncovered by savvy Xbox and vape aficionado, Xbox Studio, who explained the vape trick via his Twitter account (in Spanish).
CANSADO de las FAKE NEWS.
Os dejo un video MIO explicando porque es Fake lo de la consola "Quemada" y como han logrado este efecto incluso estando la consola "APAGADA" pic.twitter.com/LfXzIBSu6N
The videos have circulated so widely on social media that they managed to catch Microsoft's attention, so much so that they even dignified the issue with a response:
For any non-vape related support questions please check out the info here: https://t.co/3CVPbbNm6D
When you look at the videos, including Xbox Studio's one, it's easy to see how this type of problem could happen - and it certainly looks realistic. But it goes without saying, in our humble opinion, that filling your console with water vapor may not be the best thing for it.
