BMW Ditching Formula E After 2021 to Focus on Hybrid, EV Production

This Monday, Formula E lost one of its biggest backers, Audi, which will depart the electric open-wheel series to race the WEC's new top class of hybrid prototypes and the Dakar Rally on electric power. Wednesday, BMW followed this blow with one of its own, announcing it too will quit Formula E after the coming 2020-2021 season, having learned everything it can from the series.
"When it comes to the development of e-drivetrains, BMW Group has essentially exhausted the opportunities for this form of technology transfer in the competitive environment of Formula E, AD: Bluetooth scan tool. " said the automaker about its 24 races thus far in Formula E, during which it has claimed four pole positions, nine podiums, and four wins. The Bavarian marque added that it came away with "new findings regarding energy management and energy efficiency, the transfer of software for power electronics from racing to production, and an improvement in the power density of the e-motors."

BMW says it will use the expertise it gleaned from Formula E in future electrified road cars, of which it hopes to scale up production rapidly, its goal being to sell a total of one million by the end of 2021. The Bavarian marque hopes this number can escalate to seven million by 2030, by which point it hopes hybrids and EVs will make up two-thirds of its sales volume-though presumably fewer recalls as they have of late.
Leaving Mercedes-AMG and Porsche to represent Germany in Formula E further diminishes BMW's already shrinking involvement in motorsport, which is starting to resemble that of Volkswagen. A week after Audi's factory support of Germany's historic touring car series DTM wrapped at the Hockenheimring, a former BMW motorsport official suggested to Motorsport that BMW may not be present for the 2021 DTM season's opening races. Both Audi and BMW have shown support for DTM's new technical regulations which position it as a sort of GT3-plus series, and participation later in the season looks probable, but it's clear the big M doesn't mean to BMW what it used to. That, of course, has been obvious to those who have tracked M cars' perceived decline over the years.

SEAT: 70 years of innovations

With more than 300 active patents, SEAT has a wide history of innovation through its 70 years. Three main inventions revealed the fundamental aspects of SEAT, such as its forward-looking vision – the child safety seat of 1955 -; its vindication for functional design with – the logo-handle – of the facelift of the second generation SEAT Ibiza; or its firm commitment to style, with – the hidden door handle – of the second generation SEAT Leon.

The first patent in the 70 years of SEAT history – SEAT ES221068A patent – , was sealed in 1955; it described a child safety seat made up of two metal frames, articulated in such a way that they could fold on themselves like a book, You may also like: Autel OBD2 Diagnostic Tool. which made the seat portable, but above all safer than seating the children in the rear seats without any restraint system (which was common practice at the time). Its design already applied many of the current concepts for an effective child restraint system. The iron rods along with two fabric straps that limited the maximum angle between the bench and the backrest, guaranteed the stability of the child seat. These strips allowed folding and were not dangerous in case the child hit its head with them. The child's comfort was considered "with a backrest and a base made of flexible material, which could be fabric, plastic or similar".
The patent called for two large-opening hooks at the top, allowing the child seat to be hung from the back of an adult seat, especially from a motor vehicle. It also had two smaller hooks, allowing the seat to be used outside the car, suspended like a swing.
The child's body needs a proper retention system to restrain its movements as well. The patent drawings show a 3-point seat belt. The lap belt is made up of two straps that are joined by a buckle that is difficult for a child to manipulate. This belt employs a flexible or elastic material which makes it adjustable to adapt to the child's body size and keep it firmly attached. A vertical third strap is placed between the legs of the child, attached to the belt and anchored on the seat, an anti-sub strap similar to competition harnesses, which prevents the body from slipping under the belt.

In the utility model application ES1042196U, SEAT invents a lock cylinder with a very special cover for several reasons. Uncovering the lock requires pressing the top of the lid with your fingers or thumb. In doing so, the cap tilts and allows you to use the other fingers to assist the rotation, and upon completing 90 degrees, it also operates the latch, releasing the tailgate. At the same time, the cover itself serves as a handle to lift the gate with a natural upward movement of the arm.
The lid is functional and practical, but the master touch to this mechanism was to add the finishing touch by the designers, giving the lid the right style. Specifically, the cover was the "S" feature of the SEAT logo and it saw its first serial application on the facelift of the second generation of Ibiza. This utility model, which could also be motorised, has been used in the vehicles of the brand until today, such as the current generation of SEAT Ibiza and the all-new SEAT Leon.

The rear quarter glass that appears in many cars behind the rear windows allows the expansion of the area of vision for the rear occupants. In most designs, there is a noticeable gap between the rear glass and the rear quarter. Michigan top epidemiologist: We may be plateauing after COVID-19 surge

Michigan's top epidemiologist said Wednesday there's reason for "cautious optimism" because of new data emerging about the spread of coronavirus in the state.
COVID-19 case rates are starting to dip; Michigan is now averaging about 516 cases per million people, down from 610 cases per million people last week, said Sarah Lyon-Callo, director of the Bureau of Epidemiology and Population Health at the state health department.
And hospitalizations of people with COVID-19 symptoms and the rate of intensive-care unit admissions appears to be plateauing or declining, too, See: diagnostic code reader. she said, even though the state overall is now seeing hospitalizations at about 90% of the spring peak.
These are encouraging signs that suggest the coronavirus public health restrictions put in place last month - temporarily halting indoor dining at bars and restaurants and canceling in-person classes at high schools and colleges - might be starting to flatten the curve.
However, she said: "I need to be really clear as an epidemiologist, that there isn't one single metric that encapsulates everything about how the pandemic is responding to people's behavior, how the disease is spreading in the community, or what that spread means in terms of our health care system and our public health system, and people's lives."
The three metrics health officials watch most carefully to measure the state of the pandemic are the percentage of positive coroanvirus tests, the number of cases per million people, and the percentage of hospital beds occupied by patients with COVID-19 over the last seven days, Lyon-Callo said.
One of those measures - the percentage of positive coronavirus tests - appears to be plateauing and has undulated in recent weeks. It averaged 14% on Nov. 15, and dropped to 13% on Nov. 23. On Saturday, the percentage of positive tests rose again to 14.4%.
And it's still too soon to say definitively whether Thanksgiving might change the outlook for Michigan when it comes to COVID-19, Lyon-Callo said. If families got together in large numbers or traveled for the holiday, as some data suggests, there could be another rise in cases and hospitalizations on the horizon.
"It's still a bit too early to understand Thanksgiving week just now," Lyon-Callo said.
The news comes one day after the state tallied its 10,000th death tied to the pandemic and more than 410,000 confirmed cases since March.

COVID-19-related deaths are now averaging more than 100 per day in Michigan. The statewide public health restrictions that have been extended through Dec. 20 include the closure of casinos, theaters in bingo halls and cancellation of organized sports and group exercise classes.
The virus is surging across the nation as well. Since the start of the year, there have been more than 15.2 million U.S. coronavirus infections and 287,000 deaths, according to the Johns Hopkins COVID-19 Global Case Tracker.
Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said Wednesday that this crisis won't end until Americans face reality.
"Everybody uniformly needs to admit that we have a real problem," Fauci said during a virtual health summit organized by Johns Hopkins University's Bloomberg School of Public Health. "We've got to own the problem. If you don't own the problem, you're never going to fix the problem.
"We're seeing in some parts of the country, what would be equivalent of almost denial ... where people still don't think this is a big deal. They think it's kind of fake news or a little bit of a hoax or what have you.
"It's not. It's real," Fauci said, adding that the U.S. is seeing a record number of COVID-19 cases, hospitalizations and deaths. "The numbers are absolutely real."

Honda's New Robot Buddy Helps Kids Cross Streets Safely | The Drive

Honda engineers have developed a new robot buddy they call "Ropot," which attaches to a child's backpack strap and reminds them to cross the street safely. The device is about the size and shape of a GoPro camera and has a friendly expression, which presumably makes it feel more like a friend than a watchdog for kids. When the child reaches a pre-established crossing point, Ropot buzzes like a smartwatch, prompting them to stop and look left and right before crossing. The device also has a vehicle detection sensor and provides haptic feedback as an extra reminder.
The GPS-equipped Ropot route is set up in advance by a parent or guardian, with each crosswalk set up as a vibration point. Paired with a smartphone app, See: Bluetooth obd2 scanner. the guardian can review the route with the child and make sure it's working as prescribed. As a bonus, the parent can see exactly where the child is on the route through the app.
Kids typically start school between the ages of 5 and 6, and their vision is still developing. According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, both eyes are learning how to work together, which gives kids the hand/eye coordination to throw and catch a ball and accurately assess depth perception. They're also getting a feel for their independence and-ask me how I know-testing the limits of it. Kids often have this affliction called "I already know that!" and think they have all the information before they actually do.
This combination of innocence and overconfidence can lead to pedestrian accidents while walking to school, and in Japan, Honda is working on a solution for that. It's common for kids in Japan to start walking to school at the age of seven, and that's a particularly dangerous time of their lives in terms of pedestrian accidents. There's even a phrase for that: "Devil's 7 years old." I don't know how to translate that exactly, but it definitely conveys the viewpoint.
Engineer Daisuke Kiryu of Honda R & D is a father, and he noticed this problem. In the course of his research, he found evidence that children have only about two-thirds of the field of vision of adults, which makes assessing danger more difficult. Kiryu started thinking about how he can keep his own kids safer and help others at the same time.
"There is a limit to how much adults can tell their children, 'Watch out for the car,'" he said in a story on the Honda Japan site. "In order to reduce the damage caused by traffic accidents for children, another approach is needed."
Kiryu, however, is a muffler specialist, so he needed help from his colleagues to develop an electronic solution to the challenge. He recruited Satoshi Fujii, who took on system development, including sensors. Yu Saitsu was is in charge of user experience and interface design, developing materials and illustrations that explain how to use the Ropot. And Sa Kikuchi oversaw the planning and coordinating the demonstration experiment, testing the concept out with her own three children.
Think of Ropot as a cross-traffic pedestrian detection system but from a kid's perspective. While they're small, they'll enjoy the cute factor of this little robot buddy.

SpaceX Launches Upgraded Cargo Dragon 2 to ISS | IE

On Sunday, SpaceX carried out its 21st Commercial Resupply Services mission (CRS-21). The space company's Falcon 9 rocket launched off of Launch Complex 39A at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida at 11:17 AM EST.
The launch marked the updated Dragon capsule's first outing into space. It's able to carry 20% more volume than Dragon's older version and "has double the amount of powered locker cargo capability," as SpaceX's statement read.
Breaking a number of records, the updated Dragon ship can now travel up to five times to the International Space Station (ISS) and remain there for double the amount of time it previously could.

The Dragon capsule successfully separated from the Falcon 9 rocket's second-stage about 11 minutes after liftoff. On Monday 7 December, See: scan tool. this stage will autonomously dock at the ISS.
Approximately nine minutes after launch, the booster's first stage landed back on Earth onto one of SpaceX's drone ships in the Atlantic Ocean, called "Of Course I Still Love You," in a seamless touchdown.

This was the first stage booster's fourth launch and land, and became the first booster that NASA used that had carried out more than one flight. It had previously shuttled two NASA astronauts to the ISS on the Demo-2 mission this summer.
This launch marked a milestone as this was SpaceX's 101th mission into space.
The liftoff was originally scheduled to happen on Saturday but had to be postponed by 24 hours due to inclement weather.
Yesterday's cargo craft is carrying 6,400 lbs (2,903 kg) of supplies and scientific information to the ISS - perhaps including some Christmas cheer for the crew. "The crew is going to get some type of Christmasy food on orbit," Kenny Todd, NASA's Deputy program manager for the International Space Station (ISS) said during a prelaunch news conference on Dec. 4.
"I don't think that will be any surprise to them, but anything more than that ... I don't like to get out in front of Santa Claus."

Once the Dragon capsule docks at the Space Station today, it'll become the second Dragon vehicle attached to the ISS at the same time - for the first time ever.
"This is the first time we'll have a couple of Dragons onboard [the station] - we have the Crew Dragon and will soon have a Cargo Dragon," Todd said. "So, there will be Dragons everywhere you look. It'll be a lot of fun."

I, for one, think that ugly Christmas sweaters are adorable and I wouldn't mind getting in one just for the laughs.
But on a car? We'll leave that up to you. Mercedes didn't say whether it will sell cars wrapped in this festive design but if it does happen, would you care to buy one?

Watch the Drone Footage of the Arecibo Observatory Collapse | IE

UPDATE Friday 4 Dec: Drone footage of the Arecibo Observatory collapse has officially been shared online by the National Science Foundation (NSF). Two videos from different angles put the collapse in complete display.
Cables break off seemingly out of nowhere, the giant telescope swings and sways in slow motion before rapidly gathering speed and disappearing beneath the foliage in the first video. Splinters fly into the air, and debris clouds billow up from below. It's a dismaying image.

The suspended platform of the 1000-foot (305-meter) telescope in Arecibo Observatory, an icon of astronomy, collapsed in on itself overnight in Puerto Rico, according to the National Science Foundation (NSF).
This catastrophic ending was feared by scientists and engineers to be imminent after multiple cables supporting the platform broke in recent months. The inevitable has now happened, and the 900-ton platform that hung above the radio dish fell 450 feet (140 meters) below around 8 a.m. local time and caused massive damage, as documented with photos online.

Just a few weeks ago, officials had announced that the telescope was to be dismantled amid safety fears. This was the final blow to the famed telescope which has aided astronomical discoveries for 57 years and got its share of hurricanes, storms, and earthquakes. Now, the platform, with its damaged and worn out cables trying to hold it up for months, has lost its battle with gravity.

Thankfully, no one was hurt, according to staff at the observatory in Puerto Rico. The NSF said in a statement that an investigation into the platform's fall was ongoing. According to the initial findings, the top sections of all three towers holding up the platform broke away and the structure fell after that, CNN reports.

This started a chain reaction where the telescope's worn out support cables also fell and caused major damage to Arecibo's nearby learning center.

"Initial findings indicate that the top section of all three of the... telescope's support towers broke off. As the 900-ton instrument platform fell, the telescope's support cables also dropped. Preliminary assessments indicate the observatory's learning center sustained significant damage from falling cables," wrote NSF in statement.
Sethuraman Panchanathan, the director of NSF, said, "We are saddened by this situation but thankful that no one was hurt. When engineers advised NSF that the structure was unstable and presented a danger to work teams and Arecibo staff, we took their warnings seriously and continued to emphasize the importance of safety for everyone involved. What is the battery life of an electric car?

First time EV buyers are often worried about range anxiety - that feeling of being caught short on flat batteries miles from a charging point. Yet also of concern is the actual life of the battery pack. Experience with mobile phones, tablets and laptop computers has taught consumers that, over time, the batteries powering them can lose efficiency, resulting in the need for more frequent charging. So should you be worried? Well the good news is EV cells are more resilient than you'd think, AD: Autel diagnostic scanner. plus there are ways to make sure your car's batteries will survive better than most.
After range anxiety, battery life is one of the most common concerns for people making the jump from internal combustion-engined cars to EVs. All batteries degrade over time and with use, meaning they become less efficient as they age and, ultimately, the range of your car is reduced. Furthermore, battery technology doesn't come cheap, and by the time the cells are in need of replacement they will cost far more to buy than the car will likely be worth - which is why we tend to replace mobile phones in their entirety rather than replace the battery pack. Yet it's not all bad news, because there are ways to increase the lifespan of your car's battery, keeping it healthier and more efficient for longer. More importantly, while performance may degrade over time, ultimately the cells should still be providing at least 70 percent of their capacity even after 200,000 miles.
Why does an electric car battery lose charge or degrade?
Continual advances in battery technology mean that issues surrounding degradation of performance are being reduced all the time. However, even the latest lithium-ion cells aren't completely immune to losing performance over time, with a number of factors playing a role. Perhaps the biggest single contributor to the decline in efficiency is the cycle of use and charging. Frequent draining of the cells followed by a full charge can, over time, damage the battery's ability to maintain its optimum energy storage - it's why manufacturer's typically recommend charging only to 80 percent and never letting the range drop to zero miles.
Rapid charging also plays a part, because channeling so much electrical energy and so quickly generates much higher temperatures in the battery pack. Liquid cooling of the cells helps mitigate this, but use a rapid charger frequently and over time these extreme heat cycles will cause damage to the lithium ion packs. In a similar but less extreme way, cars that are used in hotter climates tend to suffer a subtly greater reduction in performance than those in cooler conditions.
How can I care for my electric car battery?
Happily, there are ways you can help preserve the power and efficiency of your battery over time. One of the major ways of protecting the cells is by carefully managing the charging and discharging of the cells, which in an ideal world means trying to avoid capacity dropping below 20 percent and not adding more than 80 percent when charging - above the latter figure is when batteries tend to get hottest, which takes a toll on the cells' delicate chemistry.
Happily, most EVs now give you the option to programme your car's charging schedule, allowing you to decide when the electricity flows and, crucially, letting you set a cap on exactly how much pours into the cells. By the same token, it's best not to completely drain the battery. Most EVs will always make sure there's a bare minimum of energy left even if it won't allow the car to move, but storing your car for long periods and allowing electricity to leech away is to be avoided.
Speaking of charging, it's best to only use (Direct Current) DC rapid chargers sparingly. Volkswagen R boss departs brand for second time in five years

Jost Capito has stepped down as the head ofVolkswagen 's R performance car division after three years in the position, Autocar understands.

This revelation comes less than 48 hours after the German car makerannounced it was ending all of its motorsport activitiesto concentrate its engineering on the establishment of an extended range of electric ID-badged models.
The 62-year-old German is yet to officially comment on the reasons for his departure, but differences in opinion with new Volkswagen chairman Ralf Brandstätter on the future of R in the absence of any official motorsport engagement are said to be behind the decision. Capito has departed the brand for the second time within the past five years.
In 2012, Capito was appointed director of motorsport for the Volkswagen brand and led the company to victory in the FIA World Rally Championship in 2013, 2014 and 2015, before becoming CEO of McLaren Racing in 2016.
After a short and turbulent period at McLaren, he was lured back to Volkswagen in 2017 to head up the company's expanding R division as a successor to Ulrich Riestenpatt Richter. Since then, Capito has overseen the development of a number of R-badged Volkswagen models, including thelatest Golf R .
Initial indications of a shift in emphasis for the R division came in 2019, when Volkswagen confirmed it had axed its involvement in the World Touring Car Racing championship, AD: Launch obd2 scanner. which it contested with the Golf. The move effectively severed any link between Volkswagen most popular R model, the Golf R, and its motorsport activities.
A further shift in Volkswagen's performance car activities also came apparent earlier this year, when it revealed a456bhp plug-in hybrid version of the Touaregwas to wear R name despite using the same suspension tune as other Touareg models - a move that critics claimed diluted the brand's standing.
Performance versions of Volkswagen's new ID-badged electric models are set to adopt the GTX name, starting with thefour-wheel drive ID 4 GTX
that's due out next Spring.

Brandstätter's decision to axe Volkswagen's motorsport activities, including the program for the ID R prototype, also appears to have put paid to earlier plans to establish a range of R-badged EVs.

Capito first worked for the Volkswagen Group in the Porsche racing department from 1989. After managing the Sauber Formula 1 team from 1996, he joined Ford in 2001, where he was responsible for thecompany's RS division , including the Focus RS, and its motorsport activities.

Messi salutes Maradona as Barca trounce Osasuna

BARCELONA (Reuters) -
Lionel Messi paid a personal tribute to the late Diego Maradona after scoring on Sunday as Barcelona returned to winning ways in La Liga with a resounding 4-0 home win over Osasuna.
Messi adorned a brilliant team display with a thumping strike into the top corner in the second half, after Martin Braithwaite had broken the deadlock and Antoine Griezmann and Philippe Coutinho had scored either side of halftime.
The Argentine then lifted his shirt to reveal a red and black replica kit of his hometown club Newell's Old Boys bearing the number 10 which Maradona wore during his brief spell at the Rosario side in 1993.
The Catalans had paid homage before kickoff to Maradona, who played for the club in an eventful yet disappointing spell from 1982 to 1984, hanging a framed signed shirt of his above the presidential box while the players held a minute's silence in front of an old Barca shirt bearing the number 10.
Barca defender Clement Lenglet limped off with an ankle problem, leaving his side with no fit first-team centre backs due to injuries to Samuel Umtiti, You may also like: Launch scan tool. Ronald Araujo and Gerard Pique.
The win followed Barca's 1-0 defeat at Atletico Madrid last week and lifted them to seventh in the standings on 14 points after nine matches, nine behind leaders Real Sociedad and second-placed Atletico.
"Maradona deserved an emotional tribute like that, we have lost a global idol," said Coutinho.
"Everyone in football admired him and we'll all miss him."
Griezmann added: "We didn't know what Messi had prepared in tribute to Maradona, it was a beautiful surprise.
"It was very important to win today because the teams at the top keep winning and we can't afford to slip up any more. We know it will be difficult but we showed today we want to win the league and have a team capable of doing that."
Messi had enjoyed a rare rest in midweek as he and Frenkie de Jong were left at home for Barca's 4-0 win away to Dynamo Kyiv which sealed their place in the Champions League knockout stages.
Coach Ronald Koeman gave Martin Braithwaite another start after the Dane impressed against Dynamo, and Barca benefited from having more of a presence in the area, which they have lacked since parting with Luis Suarez.
Barca could have taken an early lead through a sparkling move between Messi, Griezmann and Coutinho, but Osasuna defender Unai Garcia cleared Coutinho's shot off the line.
Braithwaite eventually put Barca ahead by bundling the ball over the line in a goalmouth scramble while Griezmann doubled their lead with a ferocious volley from outside the area.
Griezmann, who also scored against Dynamo, then set up the third goal by passing to Coutinho, who could hardly miss from close range.
Ousmane Dembele thought he had got a fourth but a VAR review ruled the move offside. Instead, and fittingly perhaps, it was Messi who had the final say.
