Buy-and-sell platform Carousell has shut down troll accounts that had listed Singapore, the Prime Minister, the Parliament House, and more for millions of dollars online.
The homegrown startup told reporters yesterday it had already removed the fake listings, which had been up since last month, for violating its policy. Screenshots of the Carousell listings have also been circulating on Instagram.
"While we enjoy Singaporeans' sense of humour, we'd like to take this chance to remind our users that in accordance with our listing rules, such listings are not allowed on our marketplace and have since been taken down," the platform said. Users are not allowed to sell people, put up fake ads, or misprice their items, according to Carousell, which uses AI to detect offenders.
The company did not mention when they cleaned up its platform.
Among those listed was Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong for S$5 million and the Parliament House for S$900 trillion. The Singapore Zoo was listed as S$600,000, Jewel Changi Airport for S$8 million, and even disgraced radio DJ Dee Kosh for S$100. Singapore was going at S$50 million.
"Selling Singapore jewel Airport. Used for a few months, bought $10000000. Can [negotiate] but not too much," a troll known as "j___ayden" wrote in the description. Other trolls called themselves "demolotis," "skleam," "thicchonkycat" and "lord_gaben12345."
Screenshots of the various listings were also compiled on the @sell.singapore Instagram page.
Carousell did not immediately respond to Coconuts' request for further comment.
