Singapore's parliamentary proceedings will be streamed online starting today.
The Ministry of Communications and Information, or MCI, revealed this today, just hours ahead of the start of sitting at 1:30pm. The livestream was made available from its YouTube channel.
Health Minister Gan Kim Yong and Education Minister Lawrence Wong were expected to deliver ministerial statements on the COVID-19 situation in Singapore. Other topics on today's agenda include coronavirus vaccination processes, keeping Singapore's coastal areas clean and the problem with QR code scams.
Parliament goes live months after the government said in September that it had agreed in-principle to allow proceedings to be livestreamed. That came on the back of a statement by former leader of the house Grace Fu, who had originally dismissed the idea of streaming the sessions. Fu had cited other ways of keeping up to date on parliamentary debates, such as checking out videos of speeches and statements uploaded online after sessions conclude.
