Tesla Denies Claims of Unintended Acceleration Accidents | IE

Tesla faces new claims that its cars are accelerating spontaneously after a number of accidents were reported in China. One such recent accident resulted in two deaths and several people injured.
Earlier this year, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced that it was looking into the problem of "sudden unintended acceleration" after receiving a petition citing 127 claimed incidents.

Several claims of unintended acceleration have been made over the years, perhaps the most high-profile of which was the case of a South Korean celebrity claiming his Tesla Model X accelerated and crashed into his own garage - though Tesla claims that driver data shows the driver was pressing the accelerator at the time, as Elektrek reported at the time.
Tesla has continuously denied cases of unintended acceleration, saying that the accidents were due to user mistakes caused by the driver pressing the accelerator instead of the brakes.
As Tesla stores huge amounts of user driver data, which can even show whether the driver has their hands on the wheel at any given time, the company says it has proof against these allegations.
In fact, following the NHTSA investigation, AD: autel code reader. Tesla issued a statement on January 20, 2020 titled "there is no "unintended acceleration" in Tesla vehicles", in which it claimed that the petition with NHTSA was started by a TSLA short seller.

Though Tesla has yet to have the results of the investigation for the Nanchong fatal accident, it did release findings for one of the other claims from June, in which it claimed that it was a user error and that "data retrieved from the vehicle in Nanchang only showed signs of stepping on the accelerator and none of stepping on the brake," Yicai Global reports.
Meanwhile, the NHTSA is yet to release the results of its investigation of "unintended acceleration" claims against the electric vehicle manufacturer.

Scuderia Ferrari Celebrates 1,000th F1 Grand Prix With One-Off Car, Suit, Helmet Liveries

Foundering down at sixth in the constructors' championship, Scuderia Ferrari is enduring its worst Formula 1 season in 40 years. But amidst this ugly season comes an important milestone for the team, its 1,000th Grand Prix entry, and that's cause for celebration in Maranello. F1 itself will take up Vettel's celebratory slack, and will repaint its Mercedes-AMG GT R safety cars a bright red for the weekend. Let Ferrari hope, however, that all these toasts to its lengthy history don't bring it the same bad luck it brought Mercedes at last year's German Grand Prix, when a one-off color scheme coincided with its worst finish of the season.
Then again, it's hard to get much worse than Ferrari's double-DNF at last Sunday's Italian Grand Prix, which still wound up being a gripping race.

Sensor With Silk Microneedles Detects Contamination and Spoilage | IE

Engineers from MIT came up with a sensor resembling a velcro strip in shape that can pierce through the plastic packaging of foodstuffs to sample for bacterial contamination and spoilage. The device pierces the packaging and the food via silk microneedles that suck in material through capillary action.
Once the microneedles made of edible proteins from silk pierce through the food, the tiny holes on the needles draw fluid towards the back of the sensor. This is where the analysis occurs. There are two kinds of specialized "bioinks" here that react to the bacterial presence and certain pH levels, which respectively detect contamination and spoilage.
After the team came up with the idea, Doyoon Kim bought raw fish from a local grocery store and injected them with E. coli., salmonella, and a non-contaminated control fluid.

They found that the bacteria detecting bioink turned red from blue in about 16 hours. It didn't detect salmonella as the chosen material is only sensitive to E. coli. but the other sensor; however, also turned red after a couple more hours, signaling the spoilage.
The research is published in Advanced Functional Materials. And the team consists of Benedetto Marelli, Doyoon Kim, Yunteng Cao, AD: Autel MaxiDiag MD806. Dhanushkodi Mariappan, Michael S. Bono Jr., and A. John Hart.
While it's definitely useful in times of outbreaks such as the recent salmonella contamination in onions and peaches, these sensors could also be used by consumers to check if a product past its expiration date is really spoiled.
Benedetto Marelli, an assistant professor in MIT's Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering notes on MIT News, "There is a lot of food that's wasted due to lack of proper labeling, and we're throwing food away without even knowing if it's spoiled or not," and adds "People also waste a lot of food after outbreaks, because they're not sure if the food is actually contaminated or not. A technology like this would give confidence to the end-user to not waste food."
The team wanted to come up with a sensor that could pierce through food with different textural properties. They settled on silk microneedles. Marelli remarks that "Silk is completely edible, non-toxic, and can be used as a food ingredient, and it's mechanically robust enough to penetrate through a large spectrum of tissue types, like meat, peaches, and lettuce."
Then, the team developed two kinds of polymer bioinks. The first one is an antibody that reacts to E. coli., which expands in size when met with the pathogen and pushes away the surrounding polymer that alters the way the bioink absorbs and reflects the light. The latter bioink simply reacts to certain pH levels.
The team is currently looking to speed up the process by making the microneedles absorb material quicker and making the bioinks react quicker. Once optimized to a commercially viable level, they envision that this invention could be of help at different stages of the supply chain.

Police: Springfield man calls police, says he killed girlfriend

Oakland County officials are investigating an incident Tuesday that left a 60-year-old woman dead, according to the Oakland County Sheriff's Office.
Responders from the Oakland County Operations Center received a call at 5:52 p.m. Tuesday in which the caller said, "I just killed my girlfriend," before ending the call.
Upon arrival, deputies and the Springfield Township Fire Department found a 50-year-old man sitting on grass outside home on the 9200 block of Cherrywood Road who told a deputy, "I shot her. I killed her, You may also like: TPMS Tool. " according to a release from the sheriff's office. Inside the home, deputies found the victim on the floor, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds.

The woman, who is believed to be the suspect's live-in girlfriend, was pronounced dead at the McLaren Oakland Hospital in Pontiac.
Once the scene was secured, officers from the OCSO Special Investigations Unit and the Forensic Science Laboratory assisted with analyzing the incident.
Deputies found a .380 semi-automatic handgun on a table in the home's basement. It is believed to be the weapon the suspect used.
The suspect, a resident of Springfield Township, remains at the Oakland County Jail pending charges. Officials expect an arraignment late Friday or Saturday.
This incident remains under investigation.

As the noise of the soon-to-be diesel course record holder fades into the distance, the next summit hopeful in their Datsun 240Z growls into view by the Ski Area, some four miles down the road and 2,000 feet beneath us. Minutes later, they too tear past the Playground, ushering forth a new Acura TLX in a cycle that repeats itself for the next five hours, interrupted only by the silence of an occasional DNF-or the whirr of a resurrected Tesla Model 3.
Through it all, photographers roam the mountain freely, as if there's nothing going on. The general public forfeited this liberty after 2013, when multiple boneheaded near-misses between cars and spectators forced race organizers to pen fans in or shut them out entirely. They chose the latter, and in doing so, reserved the best viewing spots for people that can be trusted not to walk out in front of race cars, such as race staff, law enforcement, and safety-briefed members of the press like yours truly.
After a brief, post-race ceremony at the summit, the racers again descend, the class winners among them brandishing checkered flags. This signals time for us too to get off the hillside; an ordeal ordinarily made miserable by the thousands of people clogging up the mountain's two-lane road. But with no onlookers onsite, there's no Texas-plated GMC Yukon in my mirrors, and the only real jam is along the pit straight, where teams are already dismantling their popups and trailering up their race cars.
From there, it's smooth sailing down to the toll gate, as well as an altitude offering enough oxygen to let me think straight.
Eventually, I pondered: as smoothly as this year's race unfolded, is it an experience I'd want to repeat? Because as nice as it was to photograph race cars on the mountain that inspired America the Beautiful without people pestering me about my camera and orange vest, or sneaking into the woods after me, the effects of COVID-19 on Pikes Peak weren't limited to vanishing spectators.
Some entrants from abroad were forced to drop out, relationships with sponsors were strained in more ways than one, and those of us allowed through the gate had to remain either masked or spread out. It was a uniquely isolating race-viewing experience, and as someone who attends races not just to see cars, but also the people who build, drive, or just appreciate them, it left me feeling empty.
With at least 10 months until the green flag next drops at Pikes Peak, I can only hope that America gets on top of its public health crisis, and that the crowds can come flocking back to what they call America's Mountain. Because for all the public's absence did to streamline race day, the public is also a crucial and inseparable aspect of what makes races like Pikes Peak possible-and worth camping out all day at literal dizzying altitudes.

President Trump's tweets won't save Big Ten football: '(Bleep) no'

As a global pandemic continues to shake this nation to its core, violence erupts in city streets and the American economy wades deeper into a recession, the leader of the free world has launched a campaign to revive Big Ten football this fall.
At 11:18 a.m. Tuesday, Donald Trump announced on Twitter he had connected with commissioner Kevin Warren to discuss the possibility of an immediate restart.
"On the one yard line!" he proclaimed.
But Trump didn't specify on which side of the field they were, and hours later it became clear they were backed up in the shadow of their end zone instead of on the edge of pay dirt.

The notion of the Big Ten reversing course on its Aug. 11 decree that postponed fall sports indefinitely invited scoffs and derisive remarks by some university power brokers with firsthand knowledge of those decisions.
"Laughable," one told the Free Press on condition of anonymity.
"F--- no," another said.
As court documents filed this week in Nebraska revealed, 11 of the Big Ten's 14 member schools voted last month in favor of the shutdown after weighing the medical risks and potential liability of playing football during a public health crisis against the financial hit that would accompany the demolition of the fall schedule. Concern about the infectious nature of the novel coronavirus and the protocols in place to mitigate the spread were among the factors influencing an unprecedented move that attracted immediate scrutiny.
In the weeks that followed, a collection of players organized and petitioned the Big Ten to reconsider. Parents from different teams joined forces and staged protests, including one outside the league's headquarters. Eight members of the Nebraska Cornhuskers filed a lawsuit.
Then coaches and administrators from around the conference began to use the media to advance an agenda promoting a relaunch of football as early as Thanksgiving week.
The groundswell of resistance united disparate factions, as rivals set aside their differences to coalesce for one common cause.
Trump saw an opportunity to lead this front in an important political battleground that could decide the November election.
Ohio, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and Michigan are all up for grabs and they're in the heart of Big Ten country, where Democrats and Republicans, conservatives and liberals, moderates and extremists root for the Buckeyes, Badgers, Nittany Lions, Spartans and Wolverines.
These programs represent alumni bases that are among the biggest in this country and their cultural relevance extends far and wide, where state pride is at stake any time the major public university's football team takes the field.
Perhaps with the exception of the publicly owned Green Bay Packers, pro franchises don't engender the same kind of loyalty, zeal and devotion because their supporters aren't stakeholders.
As someone who once controlled the purse strings of a football team in the doomed United States Football League, Trump understands this.
It's why he has made a concerted effort to appeal to college football fans ever since he has been in office. In January 2018, Trump appeared at the national championship game between Alabama and Georgia. Last November, he dropped into Tuscaloosa to witness LSU's victory over the Crimson Tide. When Trump wasn't parachuting in, he courted some of the game's biggest names - connecting with Clemson star quarterback Trevor Lawrence and LSU coach Ed Orgeron over the phone.
By consistently championing college football, Trump has tried to solidify his base.
Now, he's using the sport to appeal to undecided voters whose love of their favorite team far exceeds any fondness for a particular candidate.

Kia Ceed 1.6 CRDi 48V iMT 2020 review

A ground-breaking world first, that's what. Well, sort of:the Kia Ceedis welcoming mild-hybrid technology as part of a pre-facelift tech update due in the UK in late 2020, and the South Korean manufacturer claims this is the first time a 48V mild-hybrid system will be used alongside an electronic clutch.
The theory goes that the family hatch will eke out better fuel economy from its diesel engine without needing to sacrifice the driver involvement that comes with a manual gearbox.
Kia's‘intelligent Manual Transmission' (iMT) uses a clutch-by-wire system in tandem with the starter/generator to switch the engine off earlier than was previously possible when coming to a stop. It also allows the car to briefly turn off and coast in gear at speeds of up to 77mph. The end result is less fuel used and less CO2 pumped into the atmosphere.
Meanwhile, Kia is introducing a handful of new services to its smartphone integration system, with improved traffic predictions, augmented reality navigation and transferable driver profiles all part of the new package.
Beyond that, You may need: Autel TPMS sensor. the Ceed is just the same, with a full facelift of the line-up not due until later next year.
Anyone put off by the idea of an electronic clutch pedal needn't worry: it's almost indistinguishable from the mechanical one in the current car, with more than enough feel to find the biting point easily. The gear ratios remain identical, though, resulting in the same laboured acceleration that was a complaint on the Ceed before.
Nor is the mild-hybrid technology that obvious from behind the wheel. The engine cuts out as you come to a halt at lights and junctions, springing back into life the moment you re-engage the clutch. Lifting off on the motorway results in decent coasting, although the engine is less likely to idle here if features like the air-con are drawing power.
We saw 60.1mpg on our short test run in Germany, covering a variety of country roads and some dual carriageways. This indicates that over a higher mileage (the main concern for diesel buyers, after all), the Ceed should outstrip the 70mpg we achieved with this 1.6-litre diesel engine before it went hybrid. According to the official figures at least, the Ceed moves from 56.5mpg to 57.3mpg.
In most other respects, the Ceed is still a grown-up performer. The steering feels direct and balanced, making the car easy to place accurately on the road. There's a good amount of grip through corners and it's nicely settled on a motorway cruise. The diesel engine is quiet, too, more so than most alternatives in the class.
The same can't be said of the ride comfort. It's acceptable for the most part, although you begin to notice the vibrations on rougher roads as the suspension struggles to absorb all the bumps and jolts. However, having driven the car before, we know this isn't a symptom of the larger, 17in wheels on our Spirit-trimmed German test car, equivalent to the 3 spec in the UK.
Inside, the interior is unchanged, with the mostly high-quality material finish let down by one or two harder plastics. The menus on the 10.25in touchscreen are easy enough to navigate, although its response to inputs could be sharper.
Ahead of the test drive, Kia demonstrated the new features it has added to the UVO Connect smartphone integration system. Of most interest to buyers will be the ability to save individual personal settings on the UVO app: any family members sharing driving duties can now set their navigation, radio and Bluetooth preferences on their smartphones, so they can be greeted with their ideal set-up the moment they turn the car on. That could prove to be a genuine time-saver, and the fact that Kia has committed to providing all of its connected services free of charge for seven years is an added bonus.
The Ceed's generic styling, long gear ratios and perceived interior quality were all reasons to opt for the more accomplishedVolkswagen GolfandFord Focusbefore, and with no updates in these key areas, the Ceed remains a tier below those class leaders.
