Michigan's problem with food insecurity only got worse during COVID-19

An advisory group to Gov. Gretchen Whitmer tasked with identifying the causes and scope of food insecurity in Michigan - particularly as the COVID-19 crisis has exacerbated the problem - made several recommendations intended to address the issue.
The Food Security Council, which Whitmer created in August, makes recommendations in three broad areas: addressing the food needs of Michiganders, working with partners to improve the infrastructure of food programs and ensuring there's enough of a food supply in the state.
The 24-person council made the recommendations "to inform the state's response to a potential second wave of COVID-19 or future public health emergency," according to a report issued in October. Whitmer released the group's recommendations Monday.
The recommendations arrive as the state's central 2-1-1 dashboard reports food pantries as one of the top reasons people contact the hotline and agencies that deliver meals to homebound seniors in November said they saw a surge in need, but fewer volunteers and funding. Michiganders on federal food assistance stand to get a 15% increase in benefits later this month, through the latest stimulus package.

Phillip Knight, executive director of the Food Bank Council of Michigan, who chairs the Food Security Council, said the group set out to address "root causes as to why people are food insecure," adding that "the biggest tool in the anti-hunger toolbox would be a job and particularly one that pays a living wage."
Food insecurity, or not having access to enough affordable and nutritious food, is an ongoing problem that has only heightened during the pandemic, the advisory council's report found. Before March, about 1.3 million Michigan residents faced food insecurity and now it's about 1.9 million - up by 600,000 and most are children, according to Feeding America.
"The needs are especially recognizable and critical during a pandemic but must continue to be addressed when the current crisis is over," Whitmer said in a news release.
Updates on how the coronavirus is affecting your community and the nation
The report notes that "high food insecurity rates correlate with pronounced racial disparities, in areas such as the metro Detroit area as well as several counties in Northern Michigan in which Tribal reservations are located," citing research conducted in 2018.
Hey Y'all Detroit, a grassroots organization formed last summer, has been delivering free food boxes to Detroit neighborhoods since September. Its founder Charmane Neal sees the crisis unfold every day.
"The need for food has gotten worse," Neal said. Hey Y'all Detroit's two person organization delivers boxes to 63 households, and recently neighbors have been asking for double the portions. "...I've had families reach out to me and say they haven't really had a full meal in the last two weeks which is breaking my heart. I don't know how it got bad again, but it's pretty bad."
Too many Detroit neighborhoods lack grocery stores with nutritious food, she said, leaving residents to rely on unhealthy options. That was a problem before the pandemic, and has been made worse by the economic upheaval families are now facing.
"People are filing unemployment, not getting their unemployment, they're literally choosing between eating and paying their rent and so food insecurity has become a more prevalent issue," she said.
"There is much work that remains," said MDHHS director Robert Gordon in a news release, adding that the council's recommendations "provide a blueprint for building upon the successes that we have achieved. No one should have to worry about having enough food during a pandemic."
In reviewing Michigan's food supply and food insecurity as the pandemic began, here are some of the council's initial fin...

Michigan basketball destroys Wisconsin, 77-54, to make clear statement

If there was anyone who wasn't already sold on Michigan basketball, Tuesday night at Crisler Center would have changed their mind.
The fifth-ranked Wolverines put together one of the most impressive performances in all of college basketball this season in a startling 77-54 blowout win over No. 9 Wisconsin.
Michigan stifled the Badgers' offense, ending the first half with a 14-0 run over the final 5:27 to take a 17-point lead into halftime. And the beatdown didn't stop there: The Wolverines opened the second half with a 29-3 run to extend their lead to 40.
Four different players reached double digits, led by Mike Smith, who scored 16 points on 6 of 9 shooting with six assists. Franz Wagner added 15 on 7 of 10 shooting, See: scan tool. while Isaiah Livers scored 13.
With the win, Michigan remained undefeated and created even more breathing room at the top of the Big Ten standings between itself and Wisconsin, which won a share of the conference title last season and returned nearly every key contributor from that team.
The Wolverines have now won their last four games by an average of ___ points - and show no signs of slowing down. This is a team that is deep, talented and playing its best basketball every time it steps on the court.
Michigan's defense has improved by leaps and bounds since the start of this season, and the Wolverines saved their best for the nation's 10th-most efficient offense.
Wisconsin, a veteran-laden team, looked shell-shocked at times as it tried to score against a confident and aggressive Michigan team. The Badgers entered the game with the third-lowest turnover percentage in the nation, but had seven turnovers alone in the first half, including several 'pick-sixes' that turned into breakaway dunks or layups for the Wolverines.
Wagner alone had four steals, disrupting passing lanes and poking the ball loose. U-M also set the tone early with six blocks in the first half alone.
It was surprising to watch experienced players like guard Brad Davison and forward Nate Reuvers toss up wild shots that had no chance of going in; the senior duo combined to shoot just 3 of 14 in the first half.
One remarkable stat: Between the 5:27 mark of the first half and the 12:16 mark of the second half, Wisconsin made just one field goal and scored three points.
The Badgers are one of the nation's most experienced teams and their offense usually runs smoothly and efficiently. Yet they found themselves resigned to chucking up bad shots as Michigan's lead ballooned in the second half.
Livers has played a lot of basketball in his four years at Michigan. Yet it wouldn't be unreasonable to consider Tuesday's performance as the best game of his career.
In a high-stakes matchup, the senior was locked in from the opening tip. Wisconsin tried posting up Reuvers on Livers on the first possession, only for Livers - who gives up four inches in height - to block the shot.
Livers was simply everywhere. He scored Michigan's first four points, then hit two big 3s as the Wolverines established their first-half lead. He shut down whoever he was guarding and his second block of the game came at the rim. He pulled down five rebounds.
And he also had two crucial assists: One to Chaundee Brown to a 3, and another to Brandon Johns for a corner 3 after Livers crossed over his defender and made him fall down. The game clearly meant a lot to Livers, and his energy and passion carried over to his teammates.
Michigan's non-conference schedule was not as strong as other teams', but the Wolverines have ended any questions about the validity of their strong start. They have now played three consecutive ranked opponents, with each team ranked higher than the last, and have won by an increasingly more decisive fashion. Michigan beat Northwestern by 19, then blew out Minnesota by 25 and on Tuesday night, dismantled the Badgers, who should still be considered one of the better teams in the Big Ten and in the nation.
Right now, it's pretty clear that the Wolverines...

Report Suggests COVID-19 Immunity Could Last for Years | IE

A new study, published January 6 in the journal Science, provides a compelling, and encouraging, counter-argument to recent reports that COVID-19 antibody levels drop at an alarming rate.
The study provides a comprehensive overview of the immune response to COVID-19 in humans, a process that does not rely solely on antibodies, the authors emphasize.
Ultimately, You may need: Car Battery Tester. the paper says that COVID-19 patients who recovered from the disease still have a robust immune response 8 months after infection - a sign that immunity likely lasts for years, the researchers say.
RELATED: PFIZER'S COVID-19 VACCINE WORKS AGAINST NEW UK VARIANT
It might feel like COVID-19 has been around for years at this point - the truth is that data collection is still in its infancy, relatively speaking.
A lack of data has led to contradictory reports regarding immunity to the disease, which in turn has instigated u-turns by governments who based their initial strategy on herd immunity.
Now, a new study has provided what is to date the most comprehensive analysis of the immune response to COVID-19, and the results provide great encouragement.
"There was a lot of concern originally that this virus might not induce much memory," says Shane Crotty, a researcher at the La Jolla Institute for Immunology in California and a co-author of the new paper, via MIT Technology Review.
"Instead, the immune memory looks quite good," Crotty continues.
Earlier reports of the antibody count waning led to fears that COVID-19 immunity was short-lived. Occasional reports of reinfection only served to bolster this fear.
However, the new study suggests that reinfection should only be a problem for a very small percentage of the population, whether they have developed immunity through an initial infection or via vaccination.
For the small percentage of people who do not develop effective immunity against COVID-19, the paper claims that vaccination should offset the problem by ensuring herd immunity.
For their study, the researchers analyzed blood samples from 185 men and women who had recovered from COVID-19 - seven percent of these were hospitalized while the rest had recovered from a "mild" infection.
Each individual provided at least one blood sample between six days and eight months after their initial symptoms, and 43 of the samples were taken after six months.
The researchers measured the levels of four different components of immune memory: antibodies (which tag diseases for destruction by the immune system), B cells (which make antibodies), and T cells (which kill infected cells).
"As far as we know, this is the largest study ever, for any acute infection, that has measured all four of those components of immune memory," Crotty explains in a report by SciTech Daily.
The team found that antibodies in the body did decline after eight months, though levels varied greatly depending on the individual.
However, importantly, T-cell numbers dropped very slightly, and B-cell numbers stayed steady or even surprisingly grew in some instances.
As B-cells can produce COVID-19 antibodies, and T-cells attack cells infected by the disease, this is a strong indication that humans retain the components to fight the coronavirus for a long time.
As Crotty points out, vaccinations trigger the same mechanisms as our natural immune response, meaning that the findings should also apply to vaccinated people as well.
The scientists also point to a recent study that highlighted the fact that T-cells specific to SARS, a close cousin of COVID-19, can remain in the blood for at least 17 years after infection.
The signs are undoubtedly encouraging, but the scientists behind the study still advise caution: "immunity varies from person to person, and uncommon individuals with weak immune memory still may be susceptible to reinfection," Crotty explains.
Though it might be too early to make any conclusive statement regarding COVID-19 immunity, this latest study does suggest the vaccination won't have to be reapplied every few months and that an end to COVID-19 restrictions may finally be in sight.

Trump’s ban from Twitter creates the ultimate case of link rot in posts across the internet

When Twitter banned President Trump from its platform permanently on Friday, the thousands of tweets he put forth from his realDonaldTrump account over the past decade were wiped out. Retweets of realDonaldTrump tweets from other accounts now show a "this tweet is unavailable" message instead.
But embeds of Trump's original tweets are now displaying in articles across the internet as shadows of their former selves, some with just the text of the former tweet included, others as empty gray boxes.
This effect, known as link rot, happens when images or content are deleted or otherwise broken, so links don't point back to the original target, whether that's a tweet, a video, or a web page. In most instances, a dead link is a visually unappealing annoyance, but link rot can pose problems when it comes to legal citations. A 2013 study by Harvard University found that nearly half of the hyperlinks cited in Supreme Court decisions were broken.
For context, here's an embed of the tweet by Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey that started it all. If you click on it, it takes you to his page on Twitter.
Trump's tweets aren't completely gone from the internet; some of the president's tweets must be preserved under the Presidential Records Act (which predates Twitter by 40-plus years), and there's a sortable archive of his tweets built by an independent developer. And most internet users are familiar with the Internet Archive's Wayback Machine, a library of millions of snapshots of websites as they exist at a given moment in time, which can help when looking for old, updated, or deleted content. There's also Politwoops, the site that preserves politicians' deleted tweets for posterity, in case you really want to remind yourself about such highlights as the covfefe moment of 2017.
Twitter first introduced embeddable tweets in 2012, allowing users to display tweets within blog posts and articles as they appear on the site itself. Facebook, Snapchat, YouTube and Instagram also have allowed embeddable posts and content for some time. But as with anything on the internet, content links only live as long as the content itself. And as more and more platforms eject or otherwise restrict the outgoing president's presence on the internet we'll see more dead links where his content used to be.

Alto Reed, sax man with Bob Seger & the Silver Bullet Band, dies at 72

Alto Reed, the saxophonist whose signature hooks and swashbuckling stage moves made him a star of Bob Seger's Silver Bullet Band, died Wednesday morning of colon cancer. He was 72.
Reed, born Thomas Cartmell in Detroit, was an original Silver Bullet member, enlisted by Seger in 1974 as the Detroit rocker sat on the cusp of a national breakout. Along with bassist Chris Campbell, he was the group's longest-serving player, touring with Seger and Silver Bullet through late 2019.
He had linked up with Seger two years prior, playing as part of the "Back in '72" album sessions - including his trademark intro to "Turn the Page."
Alongside Seger, See: Car Battery Tester. Reed became a familiar rock 'n' roll character in the wake of 1976's "Live Bullet," his bounding stage moves and stylish presence lending a visual punch to Seger's live shows.
"I loved him like a brother," Seger said in a statement. "I may have been the leader, but he was our rock star. He was the audience favorite, hands down. He was bold and worldly. I learned so much from the guy. And he was a great ambassador to the fans. He took time for everybody, any picture, anywhere. I can't say enough good things about him."
Reed's sax lines were some of the most distinctive musical features of Seger's work - from the famous plaintive opening of "Turn the Page" to the sizzling, wailing solos on numbers such as "Old Time Rock and Roll" and "Rock and Roll Never Forgets."
Reed's final hometown show with the Silver Bullet Band was June 21, 2019, at a sold-out DTE Energy Music Theatre, as Seger wrapped up a six-show stand at the former Pine Knob.
Motor City Horns trombonist John Rutherford, part of Seger's live ensemble for the past 15 years, said Reed was a friendly, guiding figure on the road.
"He certainly was a showman, but he did a great job of (balancing) the showmanship with the musicality - never sacrificing the music," Rutherford said. "He was a mentor. Obviously, for us, joining a band that had been together for 35 years was sort of like being adopted into a family, and he always went out of his way to meet friends of mine."
Reed's credits extended well beyond the Seger catalog: From the '70s onward, Reed also worked with acts such as Ted Nugent, Robin Gibb, Enchantment, Foghat, Grand Funk Railroad and more.
With singer-songwriter Steve Dickinson, he released the Reed & Dickinson Band album "Tonight We Ride," following the 1997 solo effort "Cool Breeze."
Reed also composed music for a pair of film projects by actor Jeff Daniels: "Escanaba in Da Moonlight" and "Super Sucker."
Perhaps his most-loved piece of work with Seger came with "Turn the Page," where his mood-setting sax, performed by Reed solo in a spotlight, would instantly spark roars from concert audiences. The solo part - which has endured as one of the most recognizable sax lines in rock history - was crafted by Reed with an assist from road manager Tom Weschler, who encouraged him to envision a cinematic scene: a misty late-night alley under a street lamp.
His performance on the song "helped lift us to another level," Seger said in a statement.
Updates on how the coronavirus is affecting your community and the nation
Jim O'Brien of classic-rock station WCSX-FM (94.7), a weekday morning host who also stages a regular "Seger Saturdays" program, said he's cutting short his holiday vacation to be in the studio 6-10 a.m. Thursday to pay tribute to Reed's life and his work with Seger.
O'Brien came to know the sax man well through the years as he traveled the country catching Seger and the Silver Bullet Band on tour.
"It was just fun talking to him - he was always so excited about what was going on. He loved it," O'Brien said. "He was so proud of fans and family. That's all he talked about. He did so much for people in Detroit that people didn't know about. Just a great guy. You loved hearing the joy in his voice."
O'Brien also recalled a memorable moment from early in his WCSX career: Reed coming into the station on Sept. 11, 2002 - the one-year anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks - to perform "The Star-Sp...

Subaru Just Bought A Museum Quality 1990 Legacy Wagon Off Craigslist

Have you ever wondered where automakers get pristine examples of their old cars to display in exhibits? Well, here's a story.
Just over a week ago, a clean 1990 Subaru Legacy was posted for sale on Craigslist. Given the reputation of the listings site, Jalopnik took notice of the very detailed information that came with the ad, and of course, the impossibly mint condition of the long-roof Subaru Legacy with just 216,000 miles on the clock.
People took notice, as the owner of the listing, You may need: Autel diagnostic scanner. Aaron, recounts on his Facebook post the bevy of emails he received after the Jalopnik story. He received nine emails in total – three of them were solid offers. But you know what else took notice of the ad? Subaru of America.
According to Aaron, the Legacy Wagon has now been sold to Subaru of America and will go to its private collection in Camden, New Jersey. Aaron was glad about the fact that his precious ride, which for a 30-year-old example could pass museum quality (see the photos), will be given with a well-deserved T.L.C. while sitting in a climate-controlled environment, moving forward.
Browsing through the images of this 1990 Legacy Wagon above, I can't help but be amazed at how well-preserved it is, considering the age and miles it already has racked up. Even the light-colored cabin's looking quite neat. Kudos to Aaron and the previous owner who sold it to him. This is a job well done.
In case you're finding reasons why it's better to always keep your car in tip-top shape, here's a perfect one. Who knows, maybe decades down the line, the automaker could buy the vehicle back from you and be immortalized as a museum piece – a full circle and a great story for your precious ride.

S&P 500, Nasdaq hit record highs as stimulus hopes outweigh dire jobs report

By Devik Jain and Medha Singh
(Reuters) -
The S&P 500 and the Nasdaq scaled new highs on Friday, as hopes of more economic stimulus to ride out a pandemic-led downturn eclipsed concerns over a significant loss of pace in a labor market recovery.
The U.S. government's employment report showed the economy shed jobs for the first time in eight months in December as the country buckled under an onslaught of COVID-19 infections.
"We have the solution to the virus and as we get that solution out into the country and shots into people's arms, I don't think (jobs report) would be a real headwind," said Ross Mayfield, You may also like: Autel OBD2 Diagnostic Tool. investment strategy analyst at Baird.
A backstop of nearly $900 billion in stimulus approved by the government last week, positive vaccine data and expectations of a bigger fiscal package and infrastructure spending under Democratic-led U.S. Congress have pushed Wall Street's main indexes to all-time highs.
"The party in control is going to want to inject a lot of stimulus and spending into the economy which in the near-term will be good for economic growth and the market is pleased with the result," Mayfield said.
Six of the 11 major S&P sectors rose, with healthcare and consumer discretionary hitting record highs.
Economy-linked financials, materials and industrials which have outperformed their peers and scaled record levels earlier this week, slipped on Friday.
The blue-chip Dow eased from its record level, weighed down by heavyweights Goldman Sachs and 3M Co, but was still set for its fourth straight weekly gain.
The S&P 500 closed above 3,800 points for the first time on Thursday, while the Nasdaq is tracking its best weekly gain in four.
Some Wall Street bankers, however, expect a pullback in the near-term as exuberance from unprecedented monetary and fiscal stimulus have led to "frothy" asset prices.
Market participants looked past mounting calls among congressional Democrats for impeaching President Donald Trump for a second time, two days after his false claims of election fraud helped encourage a mob that stormed the U.S. Capitol.
At 11:36 a.m. ET the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 80.08 points, or 0.26%, to 30,961.05, the S&P 500 gained 6.19 points, or 0.16%, to 3,809.89 and the Nasdaq Composite gained 78.76 points, or 0.60%, to 13,146.27.
Electric car-maker Tesla Inc's shares jumped 7%, taking its market capitalization to more than $800 billion for the first time ever.
Micron Technology Inc gained 0.2% after the chipmaker forecast second-quarter revenue above estimates, as a global shift to remote work and a recent uptick in 5G smartphone adoption drove demand for its chips.
U.S.-listed shares of Baidu Inc gained 13% on plans to form a company to make smart electric vehicles, according to two sources familiar with the matter.
Declining issues outnumbered advancers by a 1-to-1 ratio on the NYSE and by a 1-to-1 ratio on the Nasdaq.
The S&P 500 posted 82 new 52-week highs and no new low, while the Nasdaq recorded 509 new highs and 16 new lows.

Oakland County executive Dave Coulter: We need more COVID-19 vaccine

Oakland County said it needs more COVID-19 vaccine to meet demand, and Executive Dave Coulter is urging the state to increase the county's allotment and expand the number of providers administering it.
Still in the early stages of the vaccine rollout, Oakland County has received more vaccine than any other county in the state, but the supply remains limited. The health division is vaccinating top priority individuals, such as emergency medical personnel, health care workers and long-term care facility residents.
The health division is looking forward to vaccinating the next priority group - police officers, prison and jail workers, Autel maxisys elite
. K-12 teachers, child care providers and those age 65 and older - but Coulter is asking for "their patience because the number of appointments available is limited to the number of doses we have received from the state."
More: Fact check: How Michigan ranks in giving first doses of COVID-19 vaccines
Coulter said the county's Nurse on Call line is "flooded with questions about appointment availability."
As of Wednesday, the county health division said it has received 5,850 doses of vaccine and administered 1,868 doses, according to its website. The county is receiving the Pfizer vaccine, which requires ultra-cold freezers.
Hospitals in Oakland County are the other locations receiving vaccines.
Overall, the county has received 69,050 doses of vaccine as of Tuesday. That's more than triple neighboring Wayne County's allotment (not including Detroit) of 20,175 doses and more than double Macomb County's 26,725 doses.
More: Michigan to accelerate COVID-19 vaccinations, offer doses to teachers, police, more seniors
Each week, local health departments and hospitals put in orders for the following week, Bob Wheaton, spokesman for the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, said Wednesday. He said the department examines their current inventory and the unmet need based on their 1A, or top priority, population estimate before allocating additional doses.
Woodward 248 is for residents, visitors and businesses in the communities along the Woodward corridor in southeastern Oakland County.
"We have allocated vaccine to entities based on what they request and what they believe they can administer, and if we find that an entity may not have the capacity to administer vaccines we will provide support so that the county or city still has appropriate access," he said.
Wheaton added: "We have already enrolled over 800 providers (over half of those just in the last week) in the vaccination program and will be looking to quickly engage as many partners as is feasible with our current limited allocation to quickly vaccinate Michiganders, focusing on those who are most vulnerable."
Gov. Gretchen Whitmer said Wednesday the state will start vaccinating more in the fight against the global pandemic, starting next week. She said local health departments are offering appointments through their websites and encouraged people to sign up quickly.
Coulter encouraged people to visit the county's vaccine website for the latest on the county's vaccine supply and scheduling appointments.
This morning, the county's website indicated there are no available vaccine appointments and that appointments will be added based on the vaccine supply received from the state.
A person can register for updates on COVID-19 vaccine appointment information by registering an email address or texting OAKGOV to 28748, according to the county website.

GIVE SIR LEWIS HAMILTON A CONTRACT: Multiple sources are speculating that Hamilton wants more than what Mercedes has to offer. Though the success of youngster George Russell (who filled for Hamilton when he had COVID-19) led to speculation that, after four championships, Mercedes might let the just-knighted Hamilton walk, it is unlikely that is really being considered. Both parties know each other, and any other arrangement would not be mutually beneficial.
Still, GiveMeSports of Europe claims that Hamilton has multiple demands that have given Mercedes pause, including a salary of over $48 million a year, plus 10 percent of the earned purse. There's still plenty of time for contract-signing, but you can bet George Russell is watching with interest and so is the rest of Formula 1, which badly needs Hamilton.

Essentially a made-for-TV event, the all-star SRX series will feature top drivers from various series in identical cars, much like the defunct International Race of Champions.

As Fiat Chrysler's "merger of equals" with Groupe PSA becomes officially approved by shareholders, industry experts are weighing in on what it will mean in terms of the products available at FCA dealerships. If some rumors are to be believed, it could mean that the slow-selling yet storied Chrysler brand's days may be numbered, per the Associated Press.
When the two auto giants join together to form Stellantis, they'll be headed up by current PSA CEO Carlos Tavares, an executive who has been known to cut poor-performing brands and products with extreme prejudice. Chrysler's possible demise shouldn't actually come as that big of a surprise when you look at it purely from a business perspective. The brand essentially sells two cars these days: the Pacifica minivan and the 10-year-old 300 sedan. (Chrysler technically lists the Pacifica Hybrid and Voyager as their own, separate models but those are just greener and cheaper variants of the Pacifica, respectively.)
A minivan and an old sedan; not exactly the money-printing lineup in today's truck and crossover-obsessed market. In the third quarter of 2020, Chrysler accounted for just 6 percent of Fiat Chrysler's U.S. sales.
Couple that with Tavares' previously-expressed desire to sell PSA cars in the U.S. and the death of at least some FCA slow sellers seems almost inevitable, something that would spell job losses across Italy, Germany, and Michigan, according to the report.
"You can't be cost-efficient if you keep the entire scale of both companies," said iSeeCars executive analyst Karl Brauer. "We've seen this show before, and we're going to see it again where they economize these platforms across continents, across multiple markets."
Conversely, don't expect things at Ram or Jeep to change much under the new management given their profitability and popularity in the U.S.
Tavares previously worked under Carlos Ghosn at Nissan, another notoriously ruthless cost-cutter. At the earliest, Tavares will have control over Stellantis in late January. In addition to serving as Stellantis CEO, Tavares will also serve as the tie-breaker on the company's board, occupying the sixth PSA seat to FCA's five.
We've reached out to Chrysler for comment and will update this story when we hear back.
Update 1:52 p.m. ET: An FCA spokesperson responded with the following statement:
"One of the greatest strengths of Stellantis will lie in its unmatched portfolio of iconic and storied brands. This merger and the resources it will release are great news for those brands and their plans to develop ever more outstanding and innovative products for their customers worldwide. And as we have said previously, there will be no plant closures resulting from the transaction."

Singapore begins livestreaming parliament sessions today

Singapore's parliamentary proceedings will be streamed online starting today.
The Ministry of Communications and Information, or MCI, revealed this today, just hours ahead of the start of sitting at 1:30pm. The livestream was made available from its YouTube channel.
Health Minister Gan Kim Yong and Education Minister Lawrence Wong were expected to deliver ministerial statements on the COVID-19 situation in Singapore. Other topics on today's agenda include coronavirus vaccination processes, keeping Singapore's coastal areas clean and the problem with QR code scams.
Parliament goes live months after the government said in September that it had agreed in-principle to allow proceedings to be livestreamed. That came on the back of a statement by former leader of the house Grace Fu, who had originally dismissed the idea of streaming the sessions. Fu had cited other ways of keeping up to date on parliamentary debates, such as checking out videos of speeches and statements uploaded online after sessions conclude.

BMW 2 Series Active Tourer Spy Video Captures Spunky Exhaust Note

The next-generation BMW 2 Series Active Tourer isn't the most exciting BMW coming down the pipe. It's a boxy family hauler better suited for cruising around town instead of tackling the Nurburgring, though it has shown promise at the famous track. A new video has again captured the 2 Series AT out testing, though it's still covered in camouflage. However, the video does capture the car's surprisingly spunky exhaust note.
It's not a grand chorus of combustion from eight or twelve cylinders, though it is a throaty, raspy buzz one wouldn't normally expect from such a vehicle. But don't let the noise fool you. BMW is expected to use the family of engines it offers in the 1 Series, which means we'll see the 2 Series AT receive three-cylinder turbocharged gasoline and diesel engines. There should also be a plug-in hybrid offered as well, though it'll arrive later.
The new 2 Series AT will ride on BMW's UKL front- and all-wheel-drive platform, which has been in use since 2014, the Active Tourer's first year. BMW is tweaking the model's proportions to help give it a sportier stance. Small changes, See: Car Battery Tester. like moving the side mirrors to the door, enhance the styling. Camouflage covers the car, though it doesn't hide a massive grille. Instead, it looks smaller than M3/M4's controversial face.
Photos of inside the car have shown a reworked and updated interior, though felt covers hid most of it. However, it does appear the next-gen model will receive a digital instrument cluster alongside the infotainment screen. The center console also featured a new look, though the photos indicated that it was far from production-ready. We expect BMW to reveal the new 2 Series Active Tourer sometime next year, with it going on sale as a 2022 model before the end of next year.

50 best Netflix shows in January 2021: 'Bridgerton,' 'Cobra Kai'

Every month Netflix giveth, and every month Netflix taketh away.
The streaming giant regularly updates its vast library, adding TV shows and films for your binge-watching pleasure and removing those it no longer has the rights
to stream. Mix in the huge number of original series and films Netflix debuts each weekend, and there's a ton of programming to sort through if you're just looking for something new to offer distraction and calm amid a crazy world.
We have curated the best of the TV shows Netflix has available to stream as of January 2021 (in alphabetical order), from its smart new originals to absolute TV classics.
Don't have Netflix? The 50 best TV shows to watch on Hulu right now
1. "Alias Grace"
Starring Sarah Gadon and Anna Paquin, this dizzyingly beautiful adaptation of Margaret Atwood's novel about a historical murderess is haunting in its storytelling. The miniseries far outpaces, See: OBD2 Diagnostic Tool. in both style and substance, the more famous Atwood adaptation on Hulu.
2. "American Crime Story"
Between "The People v. O.J. Simpson" and "The Assassination of Gianni Versace," Ryan Murphy's true-crime anthology has delivered narratives that lack the seedy exploitation so often associated with the genre. Instead, each season is a historical reckoning with huge cultural moments, portrayed with impeccable acting and writing.
3. "American Vandal"
A hilarious mockumentary poking at true-crime documentaries like Netflix's own "Making a Murderer," this series treats teen problems with the gravitas of a murder investigation. And considering most emotions and dramas feel like life or death in adolescence, "Vandal" is deeply moving in how it brings high school to life.
4. "Avatar: The Last Airbender" and "The Legend of Korra"
A Nickelodeon animated series with a devoted adult following, "Airbender" is a fantasy epic in kid's clothing with drama to rival "Game of Thrones." The gorgeously drawn series takes place in a world torn apart by war and genocide, where a pint-size chosen one might be able to save lives, if he can train hard enough and face his greatest fears. A follow up series set a generation in the future and aimed at an older audience, "Korra," surpasses its source material in maturity and storytelling complexity, becoming a modern classic.
5. "Better Call Saul"
A rare spin-off to outpace its source material in quality and complexity, Bob Odenkirk's "Breaking Bad" prequel continues to reach new heights in every season, and has long since stepped out of its parent show's shadow.
The full list:Everything coming to Netflix in January 2021, and what's leaving
6. "Big Mouth"
Updates on how the coronavirus is affecting your community and the nation
Nick Kroll's animated celebration of preteen debauchery is one of the most reliably funny series on TV (and definitely the most
cringe-worthy). The animated middle schoolers navigate first periods, crushes, and every other pubescent nightmare, along with actual Hormone Monsters (and a monstress) causing problems along the way. No series will make you happier that you've already lived
through adolescence. Season 4 arrives Dec. 4.
7. "Blown Away"
Netflix's little reality series about competitive glass blowing is mesmerizing to watch, as its highly talented contestants stretch molten materials into stunning works of art. Breezy, funny and surprising, it's a supremely satisfying series to binge-watch. Season 2 blows in on Jan. 22.
8. "BoJack Horseman"
A misanthropic Hollywood horse (Will Arnett) leads this animated satire series that is deeper, more clever and more thought-provoking than most live-action series even aspire to be.
9. "Bridgerton"
A bodice ripper taken seriously by its writers and stars, "Bridgerton" is a marvelous first entry in power producer Shonda Rhimes' Netflix deal. The series follows a group of pretty upper class Brits navigating the marriage market in Regency-era England. The resplendent ser...
